I've had pain in the bottom of both feet for over 3 years. I had Tarsal Tunnel surgery last summer and then was diagnosed with RA this past winter. I've been taking methotrexate(2.5mg 3x 12hrs apart 1st a wk), Prednisone(5mg daily)and Celebrex 200mg daily. I can get around better but still am limited. Is it common to have RA only on the bottoms of both feet. Where can I get information on this specific issue and talk with someone who has the same illness? Thanks!!

I too have a lot of foot pain with my RA, although it is not limited there. If I overdue things I can not walk. It is the bottoms of my feet.. and that does not seem like a joint.. Have you any insight on that?

Hi
I also have active RA.
I suffered pain underneath the balls of my feet for years and was told by my rheumy that I just had to learn to live with it. Some times it felt like I had sharp jagged stones/pebbles under my skin and at other times it felt like red hot broken glass.
I moved areas and changed hospitals as a result I ended up with a new rheumy who sent me down to the orthotic department who took an imprint of my soles (carbon like paper to see where the impact was) and made me specialist insoles to solve my problem. Something to the do with the bones no aligning themselves correctly toward the toes. They were pointing downwards towards my soles and as the RA has eaten away my fatty deposits, I had no padding and was basically walking on my bones. No wonder they hur so much. I now get my imprint done again every 12 months to detect any changes and my insoles are made according to my spec.

Fantastic and so simple. Please see someone. If you dont get anywhere........ See someone else. Someone, somewhere will have to do something eventually. Do not suffer in silence. I used to and it got me absolutley nowhere.

I am also on Hydroxychloroquine as I couldnt tolerate Methotrexate (too many bad side effects)
If you want to talk, drop me a line.
I am always happy to help.
Take care - Shybushbaby X.

Also, a different form of RA is Psoriatic Arthritis which affects the hands and feet mainly (and my other joints some). This effect on the feet is quite a problem. I also have had flare up on the psorosis on my feet. Doing something about the biomecanics of the feet has helped me alot also.

Foot pain-aaahhh! I have had RA for 23 yrs, diagnosed anyway. about a year or so ago I had magnificent pain in my feet. Mostly the bottom but also in the ankles. I consulted with my rheumy who sent me to an ortho specialist. He gave me a set of plastic insoles that turned out to do more damage. I went back to the rheumy who sent me to a specialist in Milwaukee-a foot surgeon with an emphasis in arthritis. He took a look at me and said the good news was it didn't require surgery. The bad news is surgery wouldn't fix it! SO, what to do? He had me fitted with a different kind of ortho-one with cork with something soft over it and I bought a new pair of New Balance shoes. Those for cross training. I got them a half size bigger. At any rate, the pain eventually has calmed to a dull roar and I only feel it if I am barefoot too long, or do too much activity. I found icing it down for 10 mins. after exercise has helped, also. But, I had to get off my feet for several months-limiting myself to activity. I also do not go barefoot in the house except for during the night. when I get out of bed in the am the shoes go on right away. These things have been a God send because my feet went from being off the charts in pain to now an occasional, overdoing it pain that I barely notice. It takes time and patience. But, I have relief and I believe you can too.
By the way, shots were not recommended as there are too many bones and joints in the foot to make it beneficial. the foot, like the wrist, is an amazing thing. there are so many bones and joints to deal with. Oh, I forgot to tell you I also have a heel spur but they didn't do surgery for that and it has healed itself. Everyone is different. Good luck to you.

I've had RA for only a year and a half... so I'm still new at this, but it all started in my foot. I thought I had a broken toe, but when the pain went into the arch of my foot... I knew it wasn't just my toe. Long story short... that's just where it started. now i've got it in about 6 different places. Only Lodine seems to help me. I'm on MTX, Pred. and Remicade, but when my foot hurts... only the anti-inflamitory works.

Foot pain keeps me up and down all night. It is certainly not my only pain but it really gets my attention. It is very painful across the tops of my feet and at the bottom of the toe joints. Also they swell along with my ankles and I have severe muscle cramps at night in my toes and feet. The dr. just told me that my iron is low and we will get back to normal; very slowly because it is hard on your intestinal your intestinal track big time. It really worries me because I remember watching my Grandma "literally" hobble around on her feet and her wrists, hands and elbows got so bad she coulnd't feed herself. All she had to depnd on
was aspirin and yes, I remember that it is an anti--inflammatory but it wasn't enough for her and her severe pain. We are so blessed to live in a time when we do when we have access to so many treatmetns. I am so sorry your feet hurt. I also take a daily maintenance dose of 7.5 mg. of Pred. and 150 mtg. Imuran. I have Lupus along with the RA and AS and
sjogren, Reynauds, hypothyroiism, and on and on with about anything autoimmune. I also have BEB, Dystonia and Dysphonia. Life gets hard sometimes and then I feel very guilty when I go back to my little Grandma and her washing down her Bayer
aiprin.

Blessings friends.

Sorry I haven't been here in a while. Just been trying to deal with "life". :o)

Blessings, hugs and an wishes for a hodo week.Possi even

yes you can have ra in the bottoms of both feet. i have had it for 10 years. i take the same medication you do. when i started i could not tie my shoes. some days i wore slippers. i still do at work when my feet get really bad. the medication has helped but there are days that are not so good. i use heated slippers on those days and i have a foot massager. sometimes if they are really swollen i put on the cold kitchen floor and ice packs on the top of my feet. good luck to you
