Jane,
I really like this doc even if he wouldn't of figured out the problem just b/c he cares and took his time to examine me and try to figure out what was wrong. I am SO happy I don't need a full fusion!! Good luck with yours. My thoughts and prayers will be with you. write me back before the surgery if you get a chance. My surgery probaly won't be until feb b/c that;s the soonest I cam get off. It is going to be such a simple surgery compared to the partial fusion that I had. Talk to you later and good luck!!

Well, here i am one finger typing again. I had a different kind of block this time and it didn't completely freeze my arm so they put me out in the middle of the operation with general anesthia. I guess it was that, that made me sick and i vomited for 24 hours .
There is a lot more pain this time and i'mstill taking pain meds, where last time i only took them for 2 days after. i just hope the end results turn out the same because my right one is great. i go back monday to have it checked and the cast put on.

Hi All....seems like I haven't been on here for a long time. Glad to hear things are going well. Sorry you had to be in the hospital Shannon...some luck huh?? Jane,I feel your pain, I still remember how awful it was for a few days. I'm doing great...sooo glad I had the full fusion. My scar is almost invisible now and except for an occasional awkwardness because it doesn't move, I'm really pleased and pain free!!

Hi everyone,
How is everyone?? I"m great. My wrist is doing ok. Is painful after work b/c of all the hand writing I do. Other than that it isn't to bad. I called the surgeon to get the second surgery scheduled. A very minor simple operation that should have been done from the beginning. It will be in Feb. exactly 1 year after my partial fusion. That has healed very well. I even started playing slow pitch softball. I got pitcher!! so exciting. The last game we had I got a very very hard line drive to my head. It bounced off my head and into the outfield!! I always knew I was hard headed. I went down immediately and had to be helped off the field. Now it is just a little bump on my head. I am glad I didn't put my hand up it probaly would have broken my wrist. It also missed my face. My gaurdian angel was watching out for me. Talk to you guys later. Write back.

Janet, I had my dominate right fused back in 91 after 2 previous surgeries that didn't work. They tried pinning, then a proximal row carpectomy and finally had to do the total fusion. I just had a total wrist joint replacement done in Dec. 2006. Both are doing great and not much pain in either one.

Hi. Newcomer here. I've been trying to find some 'real life' information about the recovery time and what to expect after a total fusion. I had a partial STT fusion done on my right wrist 20 years ago (I'm 38 now) and had it extended 3 years later. Since then things were mainly fine until about 18 months ago. To relieve some of the pain I had a denervation operation a year ago which didn't help at all and 5 weeks ago had a total fusion complete with compression plate. I'm just not feeling I'm getting any decent information from my surgeon regarding how it's supposed to feel like afterwards. I'd be interested in your experiences as I'm getting really frustrated at the lack of information available to me. Thanks.

Becks, are you going to PT? If you are maybe the therapist can answer your questions. I would inform my surgeon that he either tell me what's going on or I am calling the Medical Review Board. Some surgeons think their patients don't need to know anything so therefore, unless you get gruff with them, they blow you off. Just remember, I've been in the medical profession for over 30 yrs. and have had to deal with a few jerks in my time!

Posted this yesterday on another "wrist fusion" forum here...seems to be much more activity in this forum.

I have read every post here, everything that Shannon, Jane and Janet have gone through. In the end, it sounds like Shannon's partial fusion is finally OK, even though she swore for the longest time that she should have gotten a full fusion. Here is my post from yesterday:

Hi all...also nervous about wrist fusion sugery. All your post were informative. I broke my wrist very badly many years ago, and lately (last 2 years) have been having arthritis "attacks" which---so far---have been relieved by Kenalog shots into the (right) wrist. The Dr. told me when I came in for my first one that these shots only work for so long. He told me even then to start considering "wrist fusion" surgery. My question (or the first one) is: do you recommend getting a "partial" if it's an option, or just go straight for all the gusto (total wrist fusion)? He's told me I have a choice, right now anyway. What about the difference in recovery time between the two? Also, should I just wait until the shots no longer work, and the pain is continuous and unbearable? Or just get it done now, knowing it is inevitable. I also live by myself.

Sounds like more can go wrong with the partial, and then he'll have to go in and do a total anyway. Help......

Lots of questions.......very nervous......maybe they can just cut it off...
