Hey there. I am just curious if any of you out there are familiar with the drug Abatacept. It is still in testing, but from what i have heard it should be FDA approved in early 2006. I have been asked to be in a test group for the drug since other treatments (humira, remicade, enbrel) have all failed. I am 21 and dont really know what to think. In some ways i am all for trying new things, but it scares me that long term side affects are so unknown. Any advice??

Lindsey..

The Arthritis Foundation issued a comment about Abatacept back in Sept.I can't find it out here but a friend of mine emailed me the info and I saved it.I will type in only the most important details. The letter is very lengthy.

On Tuesday,Sept 6,2005,the Arthritis Advisory Committee of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) unanimously recommended approval of abatacept (proposed trade name Orencia) for the treatment of moderately to severely active RA.The FDA is not required to follow the recommendations of it's advisory committees, though it often does. The FDA's decision could take up to 90 days to be made final.

Abatacept is the first in a new class of biologic agents in development called co-stimulation modulators.Abatecept blocks the activation of T-cells,which play a role in the development of RA.Potential side effects of abatacept include increased risk for infection and cancer. The FDA panel determined that the benefits of the drug, including decreased pain and increased function, far outweigh the risk of potential side effects.

It goes on but that's the basics.I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Lindsey, which of your joints hurt and what medication do you take. I also have RA on both my knees, ankles and elbow. I take 20mg of methotrexate a week and 10-20mg of prednisone a day. I'm also concerned that a lot of medications don't work for me either.
