Hello everyone. I was diagnosed with RA when I was 17 and just passed my 20th year dealing with it.I am having a right wrist fusion on Tuesday using bone from my right hip. My question is about the hip pain. How bad is it? My doctor has repeatedly warned me that my hip will be harder to recover from than the actual fusion. I have had 19+ previous surgeries so I am not new to this. Did anyone have an issue with this? I am also a Mom with a 2 and 4 year old....how quickly did you feel back on your feet after you fusion surgery? I am a little anxious about about being to do my everyday "mom" things with a fused wrist but the pain has become totally unacceptable. Thanks for any advice!

Elle, I had my right wrist fused back in 89, they also took bone from my hip. I had no pain with the wrist but did suffer a lot with the hip!! I was off work for 6 weeks, but after that everything was back to normal. They put an 8 hole plate in the wrist and the only problem I've had now is I think one of the screws is working loose because when I touch or hit it in a certain way I get a tingling sensation in my fingers. Other than that, everything is fine. After the initial incision at the hip was healed, no problems at all. You should be able to do the "mommy" things with no problem after the incision is healed. Keep us posted on how things are going.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I was just sitting here worrying about tomorrow! I was thinking maybe 6 weeks until I could hold my daughter on my hip. I am glad to hear that someone else got through it, period. Well maybe I will sleep a few hours tonight instead of not at all!!! Thanks for the support...

I had my left wrist fusion in 2003 and all my pain stoppd. It takes some weeks to recover but I havent had any problems. I am due to have my right wrist fused sometime in March but as it is now I cannot use much at all and I have constant pain. I do not look foward to the recovery time but I'm so tired of the pain! When it is all over I will be able to use it again.

Hi Lorna

I am 45 and just found out that almost all the cartilage in my right wrist is gone.  I have been having pain for 5 years now.  The doc said I had 2 choices: live with pain or Fusion surgery.  I am worried about not being able to pitch baseballs to my kids and not being able to play golf with them.  Do you do any sport type activities that you would use your fused wrist?  I really don't know what to do.

Thanks

Rich

Thanks everyone for the info posted here. I'm having partial wrist fusion on Aug 31 after rougly 6 years of agonizing pain. I'll let you know how it goes, but the results posted by others here seem very encouraging and have taken the edge off my worries.

I am a 29 year old and have been diagnosed with RA for 4 years. i am currently live in Korea, my wife is Korean. I happy been more than pleased with the medical service here. I am on DMARDs and responding well everywhere but my wrists. My movement is reduced and I definitely feel reduced strength.

Since my wrist are not improving the doctor is recommending partial wrist surgeries if this continues. I have had X-rays taken and erosion is already present. I have no problem with surgery if it will relieve the pain and I can take less medication in the future. Seems like most people on this board are happy with the outcomes of surgery.

My doctor is trying to be proactive. The erosion on my wrist is present and with continued swelling will worsen. My doctor is trying to be proactive. I have read that if you wait too long you will have more problems, therefore, a more complicated surgery. Overall I have no problem being proactive. My wrists hurt and if they aren't going to get any better I am up for surgery. But at the same time I not exactly thrilled about getting surgery. I would like to go through all the options first.

Being overseas I am curious how doctors in the USA would handle the situation. My questions are about other peoples experiences.

When did your doctor recommend a partial fusion?
What condition were your wrist in at the time?
Did you get a Fusion early or wait as long as possible?
Having had surgery would you have had it done earlier if possible?

Plus anything else you want to add.
Thanks
Tim

Hi all...also nervous about wrist fusion sugery. All your post were informative. I broke my wrist very badly many years ago, and lately (last 2 years) have been having arthritis "attacks" which---so far---have been relieved by Kenalog shots into the (right) wrist. The Dr. told me when I came in for my first one that these shots only work for so long. He told me even then to start considering "wrist fusion" surgery. My question (or the first one) is: do you recommend getting a "partial" if it's an option, or just go straight for all the gusto (total wrist fusion)? He's told me I have a choice, right now anyway. What about the difference in recovery time between the two? Also, should I just wait until the shots no longer work, and the pain is continuous and unbearable? Or just get it done now, knowing it is inevitable. I also live by myself.

Sounds like more can go wrong with the partial, and then he'll have to go in and do a total anyway. Help......
