I have just been diagnosised with osteoarthritis in my right knee. It first started with my left knee, but that had a great amount of fluid on it, so I had it drained and given a cordisone shot.....I have not had a problem with it since. However, the right one has now caused me the worst pain, and this all started in the fall - I live in Wisconsin - it has eased up some since it is "finally" starting to get warmer up here. But since I have done everything that I possibly can - cordisone shots ananlgesic gels, ALEVE, ice - with no relief, it was recommended that my next step - because I am avoiding surgery at all cost - is to have 3 consecutive shots of SYNVISC lubricate injections. Has anyone out there had these shots? I would like to know the pros and cons. I do know that they are made from chickens, and I do not have any allergy to chicken products....but according to the doctors literture some of the side affects sound as bad as if I were to go through the surgery. Any thoughts? Any and All info at this stage will be helpful. The injections are expensive and we have to check into the ins to see if it is actually pain for. Also I would know if any of you have had these injections: how long before you felt relief? Did you have to go back for more injections other than the initial 3? Also did you have much increased enflammation? Thanks. Kris

My Dad had it in his hip about 3 years ago and said he felt 25 years younger. He is now 82 and is reluctant to repeat the shot due to the pain that lasts for a couple days from the needle. He doesn't like to take pain relief, so I'm sure that he suffered needlessly for not taking the prescription pain relief that would have saved his 2 day ordeal.

I just had my first Synvisc shot 3 days ago. If things stay as they are now, it will have been a great move for me. The shot has decreased my pain level significantly, and more importantly, I am much more mobile now. My knee isn't nearly as stiff as before, and for the first time in ages, I can walk almost normally. I have severe arthritis and I will probably have a knee replacement this summer. The doctor suggested the Synvisc in order to buy me some time until I can schedule the surgery, increase my mobility, and decrease the pain. So far, so good.

Hi to all, I had severe injurys at work,my right knee-shoulder-wrist.
back in 03,surgery on knee after failed therapy-in June 05 since then I have had severe pain - shooting pains-jerking-spasms and also swelling of the upper knee cap and upper thigh area. My Dr. says i might have osteoarthritis and wants me to have the injectons of Synvisc. Where any of you able to find any deep research on the long prognoisis after the injections? Before they decide more surgery. At least with some relief from all of my pain medications, I still get break thro pains. My surgery for the shoulder so far is good, no word ont he wrist yet. Laugh. I am looking for a supported web chat group also, as being house bound almost thro Dr., orders of limited walking,no twisting turning, sudden movements, leaning, bending,no prolog sitting. And the depression of no one really understanding, what is like to go from a very active person to this.
But I am keeping a daily pain log,etc
and working with the dr's. It does help to some degree. Belinda home bound. Whitefawnf@earthlink.net
