My 4year old daughter was recently diagnosed with polyarticular JRA. We found a wonderful peduatric rheumatologist in KC, MO. Her advise--in addition to a 12 month course of Naprosyn--was to concentrate on the role of nutrition. 1. Eliminate trans fatty acid--"never buy margerine." 2. Dramatically reduce with a goal of eliminating refined sugar. 3. Concentrate on protein, fruit, veggies. 4. Add Omeg-3 fatty acid foods. All good advise and we're doing our best. Looking for others who've recieved similar advise and encorporated it into your family's life. How'd you accomplish this? Refined sugar is in everything (even table salt has it!). What's the best way to add Omega 3's? Have you seen an improvement in your child's condition?

Paula, My daughter is 6 with polyarticular JRA. I noticed from your posting that your doctor has not recommended Methotrexate. It has been a great miracle drug for us. Since you are recently diagnosed, you may want to research it. We used the Naprosyn for 10 months before my daughter had a reaction. The Naprosyn worked great for a long time. As far as diet, we have tried to do better with our diet, but my daughter loves pasta and its hard to steer her away from it. We do talk alot about eating heathly and due to that she will often stay away from sugar herself. Good luck with the diet. Take care, Amy

Hi, Our 3.5 year old was diagnosed with Poly JRA about 1 year ago. After a lot of trials and tribulations, we finally got turned on to O-3 too. It has helped....not cured, but helped. Here are some tips.... We primarily use Flax Seed Oil....with the highest O-3 concentration we can find....aprox. 7700mg/TBS. We like Barleans. We put this on whatever we can...it's GREAT in yogurt, mixed in an egg, over pasta....and our biggest hit is to air pop popcorn and toss with melted butter & flax oil. We aim for 1-2 tsp/day....and did see improvement and drops in medications. Remember you can't heat the oil over 300 I think or else you lose the O-3. We also encourage walnuts & hazelnuts. I substitute flax meal for flour in things like pancakes, also bread chicken breast in flax meal and fry...it's pretty tastey. We always use O-3 eggs now, although they don't have a huge hit....but every little bit helps we feel. And finally....did your doctor suggest any limits on how much O-3 a 4yr old can tolerate? I know at some point it starts acting as a blood thinner, but I can't find anyone who can provide any further information??? Our next mission is to start eliminating the trans fats...have you had much luck with that???

Hi Paula,

Your PR’s advice sounds reasonable. My twin sister suffered JRA symptoms since she was 16 (now she is 48). Maybe her case does not apply to your daughter because of her age, but it is a data point you might consider. My sister’s feet and ankles often swelled horribly and ached after standing for long periods while she worked. I found that she was typically only consuming about 1g of daily omega-3. We added more omega-3 via a flax meal composition (with blackstrap molasses and whole grain flour) until her symptoms improved. Ultimately, the benefits peaked after we adjusted her daily omega intake to about 11-12g omega-6 and ~10g omega-3. Now she can jog daily and her flare-ups are minimal. Good luck.
