Hi my name is Theresa, my daughter (who will be 10 in October) is scheduled for a right ankle synovectomy on September 18th. She has had a total of 17 joint injections (over 8 years) within her ankle and subtalor joint and her pain and swelling has not diminished at all since March of 2005. She has other affected joints due to her JRA, but the ankle is the "stubborn" joint and the only one that Remicade has not significantly helped.

I need feedback on the synovectomy; I can't find many testamonials at all on the ankle and have found NONE in regards to children. Even if it wasn't your ankle can you please share with me your story... how the procedure went, hospital stay, recovery time? How quickly were you back up and around??

I am pretty scared about all of this and just would appreciate walking into this with a little more reality.

Thank you!
Theresa

I just had a RT Elbow Synovectomy.. The synovium has been swollen in my elbow for years now.. I had a cortizone injection but it did nothing so they went for the synovectomy ... It was day surgery.. Pretty much as soon as I was awake I was rushed out the door and sent home.. It has been 10 days since my surgery and Im virtually painless.. except for of course the incision.. Its still numb but I guess that is because they cut into the tissue.. My extension is back to what it was before the surgery.. I think my arm was so sore before it can only get better lol.. Pulling my arm in is also difficult but I have only had one day of PT... I get my stitches out the 20th and I will keep you posted.. Synovectomy is usually a good way to go it gives the joint life even if its only for a few years.. as long as there is healthy cartilage underneath there... Good luck with whatever you decide... The way I see it if it only helps for a little bit it still helps... We are in pain everyday its the little things that help sometimes

I had some toe synovectomy along with a joint replacemnt in my feet. I have RA. Things have gone ok for a few years. Able to wear shoes and walk in the mall. I now again have toes crossing each other. So I am sure surgery is again in my future. Not in alot of pain, just depends on the day.

I am 37 and a mother of three beautiful RA free children. When I was 3 and 4 years old I had synovectomies on both knees. At that time my doctor cut me from one side of my knee to the other. I must say after that I was pretty much pain free in my knees for 15 years. Now I am on my second knee replacement for my left knee and 10 years with the right replacement. Your daughter is young and will get well fast. Just make sure after the sugery her pain is under control. Make sure she gets up and moving right away and sticks with it or she will be stiff forever. When I had mine they didn't make me do the exercises and until my replacements I walked with bent knees because of it. Good luck and my thoughts are with you.

Hi everyone, my last post here was almost 2 years ago!  My then 9 year old daughter did have an double open synovectomy and recovery went much better than any of us though (including doctors).  She had about 7-8 months of pain free life after recovery and then slowly started to have some pain creap back up.  In the last 8 weeks things are not going well at all and they just did another MRI on Monday to find that not only is there thickened synovium, but now pannus formation.  She is sceduled for a CT scan and a meeting with her surgeon on Wednesday.  Her rhemy told us to expect that she will need another open synovecotomy, but it seems SO soon.  I really expected the results to last longer.

It is very hard to find any other kids in this situation, which is why I come to you all where you have a wealth of knowledge as many of you have been down these roads.  Anyone find that a second synovectomy produced better results than the first?  I feel like we are headed to a further surgery... be it fusion or joint replacement (hopefully WAY down the line), but this new pannus formation issue makes me nervous too.  On a scale of 1-10 in pain my daughter is typically a 3, but lately has been 7-8 and is opting out of a lot of things to avoid pain.

Anyone been through this?  Anyone have pannus formation?  does it sound scarier than it is?  anyone with a 2nd synovectomy that was more successful than the first?  any other wisdom you can impart on this nervous mama!

Thank you all - you guys deal with a lot, I browse here from time to time as I myself have RA, but feel blessed that it is very minor.  I wish I could trade with my daughter though.. she's been through the ringer!

Thanks for any/all your feedback

Warm Regards,

Theresa
