Tomorrow (10/18) my mother is scheduled for her 1st Remicade infusion. What should she expect? Does this drug really work? Has anyone developed cancer? The side effects are so scary! She is currently on Arava and MTX. Prednisone offered no relief. Any words of advise? HELP...

I've written about Remicade and what to expect and my experiences at everything-and-nothing-at-all.blogspot.com. Just click on the link in the right-hand menu that says "Remicade". I have another post that will be going up soon called "Remicade FAQ".

Cancer is a VERY rare side effect, and researchers do not agree as to whether it's the meds or not. People with RA are already at an increased risk for cancers, particularly lymphoma.

I would wonder though.. If prednisone didn't help, is it really inflammatory arthritis? Could the pain she's experiencing be from osteoarthritis (in addition to inflammatory arthritis)?

Thank you for responding and for the heads up about the osteoarthritis. We will definately be following up on that lead. Your blog is so informative and helpful. I am printing it out for my mom to read as we are about to head out for her appt. Looking forward to reading your Remicade FAQ's blog.
Thanks again!!

I'm glad you found the info helpful. I know that before I started Remicade, I wanted more information from a patient's perspetive, but it just wasn't out there.

FYI - the FAQ is up. If you have other questions, post them as a comment and I'll do my best to answer them or find the answers if I don't know.

I am really surprised the prenisone did not help.
I have been on Remicade for 7 years, and it has allowed me to retain my independant living. I have not had any side effects except from the methotrexate. Those side effects have been counteracted by taking folic acid.
