A very good article from Jane Brody of the New York Times that deals with living with chronic pain. A little excerpt from part 1 of the article(it's a three part article)

"Pain is an invisible, subjective symptom. The body of a chronic pain sufferer — someone with fibromyalgia, for example, or back pain — usually appears intact. There are no objective tests to detect pain or measure its intensity. You just have to take a person’s word for it.

Nearly 10 percent of people in the United States suffer from moderate to severe chronic pain, and the prevalence increases with age. Complete relief from chronic pain is rare even with the best treatment, which is itself a rarity. Doctors and patients alike, who misunderstand the effects of narcotics, are too often reluctant to use drugs like opioids, which can relieve acute, as well as chronic, pain and may head off the development of a chronic pain syndrome."

Can I comment on living with chronic pain?

It sucks.

Point blank.

End of story.

Yes, you are correct - today is a very, very achy day for me and I am crabby.

Sincere thanks to all for listening, feedback, and humorous injections.

Lynn, Thanks so much for the information it is really helpful I think I'm going to print it off and let my husband read it and maybe my arthritic Dr. cause He has told me your numbers look good why are you in pain, then when I complained to my medical Dr. He must have told my RA Dr. then my RA Dr. did listened to me better when I told him I hurt. You sure find good information, thanks again for putting all your time and effort in helping us.
Take Care, Karen

You're welcome Karen. I'm glad the article helped

Enigma,
Yeah, I think RA sucks too! But, there are ways to manage chronic pain in RA patients. I cringe when I read that some RD's won't prescribe pain meds to their patients. In my opinion, there is nothing noble about being in pain. More doctor's need to be made aware of the pain that comes with RA. It's not just a little ache or twinge!

Stepping off my soapbox,
Lynn
