Advanced Bio-Surfaces, Inc., (ABS) an orthopedic implant developer and manufacturer, announced the OrthoGlide Medial Knee Implant has been implanted in more than 300 patients in the USA. The OrthoGlide implant is a minimally invasive device intended to relieve pain caused by moderate osteoarthritis of the knee.
"The interest from surgeons and patients for a minimally invasive alternative to the current knee replacement options on the market continues to expand," said Dr. Jeff Felt, Chairman of Advanced Bio-Surfaces. "We have increased the number of training sites in the United States in an effort to accommodate the number of interested surgeons. As the surgeon community learns more about the product and its minimal surgical approach, they understand the need for the OrthoGlide implant as a viable option for some patients. The growth is inspired by surgeons who want to be trained on a procedure that can be positioned as an alternative to total knee replacement."
In addition to training and supporting the orthopedic surgeon community interested in the OrthoGlide implant, ABS is also involved in a clinical study. This week, during the American College of Rheumatology's annual meeting in Boston, MA, William Arnold, M.D. will present data from the study that supports the OrthoGlide's clinical effectiveness. The presentation will be held in Room 153 of the Boston Convention and Exhibit Center at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 10th.

I had 2 tkr in 2000, and since then there have been advancements in knee replacements and tkr surgery. They have a artificial knee jt now designed specifically for women. Computer assigned surgery is now used and can result in a smaller incision. This less invasive device is another option for those w/disabling knee pain.
I notice the article states that ABS trains surgeons in the use of this device. The training ABS pays for and provides to surgeons could be viewed as an effort to influence them, or as a "payoff" to doctors to use their device as suggested by an Associated Press article posted here regarding artificial joint companies. Providing training, is a part of their business, and as long as companies disclose such practices, costs, recipients, and make this information available to the public and to government oversight and scrutiny, illegal or unethical practices or behavior can be curtailed.

I just view this as another option for people to consider....As for the training, I'm with you Joy, as long as companies disclose these practices and make the information available, it seems okay to me.
