Hi, everyone. I am 41 and have RA for about 15 years. It has severely effected my right thumb where the thumb meets the palm of the hand, the metacarpo-phalangeal joint. I have seen 2 surgeons who have both recommended the fusion of the main bone in the palm or the metacarpal bone to the finger bone in my thumb or the thumb phalange. Can someone let me know if they have gone through this surgery and if so, what their experiences was with it? Or if anyone knows of any other alternatives to this surgery, I would love to know about it. As you know, most doctors don't really talk much and getting them to answer your questions is like pulling teeth. Please help, my surgery is scheduled for January 25th.

Hi Lullu,

I had my right thumb fused December '06 and I can use it perfectly! I didn't think I would have movement, but I do! I was actually wiggling it when it was in the cast still, showing off how well it moved and when they took the cast off, my palm was SO bruised!! I wasn't supposed to be "showing off." But, I honestly didn't know that I wasn't supposed to move it like I was. Dumb of me...it was in a cast, I know. But, it was really exciting and I am so happy with the results!

Best wishes!!

Nikki

Hi Nikki, Thank you so much for your response. I am so apprehensive about the whole thing but now I feel somewhat better. Thanks again. And I definitely won't move it.
