Susan - you said something about being unwilling to take Enbrel because it would inhibit your ability to have children. I am a young female and my doctor is trying to put me on Enbrel. I've heard about the risks of infection, lymphoma and blood cancer, but I hadn't heard about that one. How serious is it?

Dr. Weil mentions an anti-inflammatory diet when talking about RA and allergies and Alzheimer's disease. Potatoes and corn are inflammatory. Check out his website, www.drweil.com to find out more. He also suggests tumeric and ginger pills which help reduce inflammation in the body. Check that out on the website as well. He has never suggested going off RA medication, but has said that these things may help reduce the need of stronger or higher dosages.

I looked up Noni juice to see what has been studied about it. I found this~~~~

The interesting thing about this is that the snake oil salesman is still alive and doing quite well today. And people are still getting conned into buying his “magic” bottles of sugar water. It’s sad but true. But what does all this have to do with Noni Juice? Everything! For example, Noni contains a so-called “miracle” ingredient named proxeronine which is supposed to be a precursor to xeronine. Now, have you ever heard of anyone dying from a deficiency of either proxeronine or xeronine? No, you haven’t? Have you ever seen either of these two elements on the RDA list? No? Well, have you ever seen any valid peer review research that proves anything whatsoever about these two ingredients? Of course not! And, more than likely, you never will. There’s absolutely NO real science, NO real research and NO real proof – NOTHING – behind the Noni salesman’s hype that his bottles of sugary juice cures arthritis, ulcers, sprains, depression, high blood pressure, menstrual cramps and on and on and on. The Morinda company, who first hyped Noni Juice, has been busy settling legal actions taken against them by the Attorney Generals of California, Arizona, New Jersey and Texas. The charges? Making unsubstantiated claims about Noni Juice. Noni is supposed to be a juice from the fruit of the Polynesian morinda citrifolia tree. That tropical island origin gives the Noni marketers some pretty exotic looking background pictures from which to hype their snake oil. And you might think that since it’s a fruit juice, it couldn’t taste all that bad. Not so. The citrifolia fruit is so bitter it has to go through some very hefty processing to make it palatable. As a fruit, wouldn’t it have some nutritional value? After all, it’s being marketed as a nutritional product. Let’s see. A current independent laboratory test shows only miniscule amounts of B vitamins and virtually none of the antioxidants – vitamins A, E, carotenoids and flavonoids. Noni does have some vitamin C, but only 6 mg per serving, which means you’d have to drink 10 servings in one day just to get the RDA or minimum daily requirement for vitamin C. Noni also has some protein and calcium. But you’d need to consume 22 bottles for your bare minimum grams of protein. That would cost you around $860 a day. And, for calcium, you’d have to drink 50 bottles to reach the RDA for a woman (more if you’re pregnant – heaven forbid!) at a cost of almost $2,000 a day. So, since there’s absolutely no valid research to back any claims for Noni’s “mystery” ingredients and since lab tests prove it has virtually no nutritional value, what does it have? Noni Juice is 96% high insulin producing carbohydrates. The Morinda company says “Noni Juice is smart nutrition.” I don’t think so! If you’re really smart, when the Noni Juice salesman gets out his bottles of sugar water, you’ll start heating up the tar and plucking the chicken. Gather a mob and scream, “No, No, Noni!” Because Noni is a great big NOT!

Like the old saying... "If it sounds to good to be true~it is!"

Dear Asparagus,
Methotrexate is the worst one. It is rated as catagory X - known to cause birth defects if either parent is taking the drug during conception or pregnacy. Enbrel is rated catagory B, which means it is not known whether or not it causes birth defects. I know somebody who has died taking enbrel, she was being treated for severe psoriasis, and developed lymphoma within 6 months. I know another who has RA and tolerates enbrel fairly well. I decided it the risks were not worth it for me, even though I've lost some mobility in the last two years, I still have hope that alternative therapies still show some promise, and I am willing to dillegently pursue them. I feel better than I did last year, thats for sure, and I'm not taking any steroids. The book that I could not remember the name of was Barbara Allan's Conquering arthritis. Even preliminary applicantion of her suggestions helped me, although I have yet to do the fast, which I plan to try. If you are a young woman, and wish to have children, I would have a conversation with your ob/gyn before going on any new drugs that have questional side effects. I wish you well in your search for the right answer in manageing your symtoms.

Thanks for the heads-up, fellwater. I'm not trying to concieve now, thank heavens, since I am on MTX. I think the rheumy who put me on MTX was not entirely up-front about how dangerous it could be to my immune system, etc. My current rheumy is being much more wary about putting me on Enbrel, which, it seems, isn't nearly as nasty as MTX. I think the real reason I was put on MTX before Enbrel was because my insurance didn't want to pay for the later unless they had to. They also made me try Naprosyn before letting me go on to Vioxx.

I am new to this site. I have had my first flare of RA ongoing since November 1st. I was strong and now I am 1/10th the woman I was. I am refusing to take any MTX. Am searching for an integrative RA. My current RA, says "research does not show that diet has anything to do with RA." BULL. I have fasted and have stared eating like NOT DONE YET, and it does make a difference. I look at food like it is pain itself. It is very easy to eat clean. I love the new green juices on the shelf in the produce section... Called Bolthouse, or Naked juices. The cleaner I eat, the better I feel. I am trying massage, dry sauna, chiropractic, and aromotherapy, and Goji Juice. Sorry to be advertising here, but the first bottle of GOji juice, made my knees 25% better, and my energy went up and so did my attitude.
And the chronic, chronic pain that I had from so much swelling has gone away. I now take 4 advil a day. I think I was alergic to the naproxen they first gave me. Anyway, I still have inflamation, and joint tenderness, and aches, but I am fighting the MTX.
Somebody tell me. . . will I end up in a wheel chair? I can't even saddle my horse . . .let alone get on him without help. I look forward to much chat with you all, and may God bless your healing.
Look up cowgirlconnie.freelife.com
for Goji juice info.

HI,
I am 25 and have had JRA since i was 2 years old. I too, am trying to change my diet. i was on medications for a long time MTX is very hard on the body. I recently started taking flax seed oil supplements, which are rich in omega 3 fatty acids. they have been working very well. I wish i knew about them sooner! I highly recomend trying them! I also wanted to ask, has anyone ever read that protein is not good for people with ra? I think i read it somewhere, our bodies do not use protein efficiently and it eventually turns to fat. Has anyone else ever heard that? I am going to try to find more info on that... antioxidants are very good also..

Alisa, I have read quite a bit about animal protein being bad for RA. I was doing homeopathic treatments for a while and she also said to eat a low protein/no animal product diet. If you do a search on google for protein/rheumatoid, you should be able to get plenty of information. Also, there have been some studies done that show a vegetarian diet benefit RA. I know that I am in major pain if I eat meat but if I eat vegetarian, my pain is much, much less.

As a Naturopathic Doctor I will say you are on the right course. That is a great book with very accurate info. In my past I have used many different modalities and diets with all auto immune disorders, and I have just found a method that truelly works better and faster than anything else. It is called the Yuen Method. This is something everyone requires to witness and learn for themselves. I did not believe that there was something out there that worked this fast and effectively, and that anyone can learn. The website is yuenmethod.com for all who are intrested. For those in the Southern California area Dr. Kam Yuen will be having a series of free lectures in the area. The next free lecture will be in Huntington Beach on the 10th of May at the Festival Hall at Od World. Here is the address.
The Festival Hall at Old World Village
7561 Center Ave. #49
Huntington Beach,CA
92647
The great part of these free lectures is that the Doctor will work on most of the people in the audience one on one, which would normally cost about $500.00 for an appointment.

I'm sorry I didn't see your question earlier, dazed. Please forgive me.

I've not heard of upping your protein...that's a new one to me. But the fish, chicken and eggs are nasty bad cause of the anacrondic acids that all animal products have (sorry, I don't think I spelled that correctly). Those acids are quite inflammatory/reactive to arthritics so the more you stay away from them, the better.

I get my protein through beans mostly, whole grains like quinoa and amaranth (brown rice is also good too) and deep green leafy veggies like kale and swiss chard. Protein is in just about everything, so I'm usualy not really worried about maintaining protein levels - just keeping my diet varied and free of reactionary foods.

I'm not a good one for eating plans, but a typical day usually looks like breakfast salad in the morning with whatever veggies I have on hand (usually, some sort of bean, tomatoes, onions, zucchini, corn, lots of greens and whatever else I have to throw in *Grin* ), lunch might be a simple stir-fry or a veggie soup (again, staying away from things ilke chicken broth or beef broth AND staying away from anything with a lot of sodium in it) and dinner will be a lot like breakfast and lunch - heavy on the veggies, beans, whole grains and deep green leafies. Raw nuts/seeds are also high in protein and high in the good fats, but very low in reactions, so I tend to snack on those during the day if I need to.

A friend of mine also turned me onto a product that helps me LOADS as well - I can't get over how well it's working for me. It's at www.juiceplus.com/+rm54619 for anyone else who wants to check it out, too.

Connie262 - your message made me cheer! Yes, eating clean DOES work and any rhumey that says it doesn't has swiss cheese for a brain! Keep up your clean eating and I pray one day, you'll be able to ride tall, proud and pain free!

Hi
I have great pain when I eat fresh tomatoes, but I can eat (small amounts of tomatoes sauce) without any problems. I react to wheat also.
Hope you feel better.
