There seems to be alot of discussion about deformity so I wanted to add a few of my observations with my daughter. When you are really in the worst of a flare and you see the deformity it is frightening. The joint may be bent, the joint is probably very swollen and there is probably significant muscle atrophy. The bone deformity is probably not going to get better but some of the disfiguring features do improve at least a little. The swelling will go down, contractures can often be dealt with, and the muscle can be bulked up again. By all means, the deformity should not happen in the first place if at all possible. I try to spot changes fast and report to the doctor to nip it in the bud. My only point is that the joint may be deformed but the appearance might not be quite as bad after the arthritis is better controlled.
