Hi guys, we are new to MTX. Ryan is on MTX for her arthritis so she is imunocompromised. I just found out that her sister has Strep. The PA that treated the daughter with Strep wondered if Ryan (the one with arthritis) should be put on an antibiotic even though she doesn't have any symptoms of Strep. She told me to contact Ryan's doctor but I won't be able to reach her until Monday and I'm going to worry. I also don't think that most Physicians have that much experience with this. Have any of you had any experience with this issue.

Terry, My daughter with arthritis, Emily, is one of six children and was on methotrexate for more than 8 years. She's now on enbrel. In all our years of dealing with these issues we have never had a rheumatologist or a pediatrician (and we're a military family so have had a few docs!) suggest that Emily be put on an antibiotic if one of the other kids had an infection. What I have always done is take Emily in sooner rather than later if I have any concerns. Try not to worry too much~~~ easier said than done, I know, but you can drive yourself crazy with worry over this stuff! Hope Ryan remains well, her sister feels better, and the strep stays away from the rest of the family. Liz

Thanks, I think the PA is over-reacting too. I'm just going to look for signs of infection as you suggested before subjecting her to another doctor's apt. She has been put through too much already. Thanks for the reassurance. Terry

I don't think waiting till monday will be too much of a concern. My daughter goes to daycare and is usually the first with the symptoms not the last. Though I diffinatly would keep an eye on Ryan for any symptoms. No need to give him any meds. that he don't need.

Terry- My Rheumy told me to bring my boys to their pediatrician if they have a fever over 100. This way Mandy could avoid getting infections. They did not say for her to go just the boys. I dont think she needs antibiotics unless she shows signs of infection. Take care Cindy

Terry- Hope both your daughters are feeling better today. Mandy has not been able to walk for the past three mornings until at least 2 in the afternoon. I am giving her tylenol and wrapping the knee. Warm baths ect. NOTHING is helping. She crawls across the floor if she needs to get somewhere and I am not right there to help her. This is killing me. There are no signs of swelling just the deformity. The knee is not hot to the touch either. What is going on? She was getting her mobility back until three days ago. I have not even been able to do the PT at all, she just screams if I try to even bend the knee. HELP !! Take care Cindy

(((((Cynthia)))))) Oh Cynthia, I know how terrible it is. It just breaks my heart. I would call the Rheumy but I'm not sure what they can do. They should at least know what is going on. Maybe the injections can be moved up? Ryan asks for a hot water bottle when she is in a lot of pain. When she couldn't walk in the AM I use to carry her to the tub and she would spend a lot of time in there. We bought bathtub paint and she stayed in there a long time. I also buy new videos during a flare to distract her. .

Terry- Her injection is still scheduled for Wednesday. She ran a low grade fever yesterday so I called them today. Its from the "new flare" so they are going ahead with the injection. Yes, you do know how terrible it is. You been dealing with it longer than I have. Things should get better after the injection. Take care Cindy

Well Ryan never got Strep but she did have a sore throat so we had the throat culture just in case. We're glad that we didn't have to stop the MTX! We're still waiting to see if it is going to work. It has been 6 weeks. Thanks for holding my hand everybody. Terry
