Hi, I am new and have never posted anything any where so this seems a little odd. it seems you all are experiencing similar probs. My 9yr old was diagnosed w/ poly jra 9months ago and we just recently started Enbrel. Last time I injected her I noticed a lump form as I was doing it. Scared the heck out of me and she told me that it hurt more then the other injections had. It went away quickly and left no marks. Tonight is enbrel night again and I m wondering if anyone else has noticed this before? Did I do something wrong? perhaps a bad angel?

Thank you,

Carleen

I don't have personal experience with Enbrel (we are on MTX only at the moment), but my understanding from talking to folks on it is that it does sting more than most and that an injection site reaction (lump) is not unusual.

It doesn't sound like you are doing anything wrong. Just the nature of the medication.

Maybe someone with experience with it will chime in as well. But I have heard anecdotally what you are talking about from others as pretty common with that drug.

Hello, I am new to this forum, but have taken Enbrel in the past.  Sometimes a little bump does form under the skin. Its really nothing to worry about, one thing you can do is to put a ice pack on the site after the injection to reduce any swelling. I hope this helps.

 Hi Carleen,

I have a 7yr old who has poly JRA she was diagnosed at 4 yrs. She started Enbrel 8 weeks ago. When she gets her injection there is also a lump, it is the med. and it is normal. You didn't do any thing wrong.

Are you using EMLA cream? If not ask her dr. for a RX for it. It numbs the injection site. We use it for blood draws also.

My daughter, almost 5 years old has been on Enbrel since January.  She sometimes gets the welt and sometimes she doesn't.  But I find it happens less when going really slow with the injection.  The welt is from the Enbrel pooling up just below the surface.  It seems to be more so when using ice (before to numb the area) but we still do the ice because that is what my daughter prefers.  The welt can be itchy (but we treat with topical cream) and red and swollen or like a raised area.  The downfall from going really slow with the injection is that she tends to bruise, but it seems to help with the welting.  Which is more irritable than a bruise.  We also make sure to do the injection in a different (recommended) site each time.  I also tend to rub the area of the injection afterwards - don't really know it helps, but I can feel it pooled up in there and was hoping that it helps disperse it.  I use a paper towel right after the injection and press for a while to make sure that the hole closes up and then rub it out a little bit.  It doesn't hurt her and makes me feel better.

Sorry for taking so long to respond, but this is actually the first time I have written and/or been on the boards.

Good luck.  Let us know how it goes.

Melissa
