Hi, I was just diagnosed with RA last week and started on Methotrexate Friday evening at a dosage of 12.5 mg. I took the dosage on Friday hoping that if I had a negative reaction it wouldn't be during the work week, but the only reaction I seemed to have this weekend was feeling even more tired. Otherwise I was fine both Saturday and Sunday. Monday I started getting some GERD symptoms and that evening started getting stomach pain during and after supper. I took a couple Tums before bed and it seemed to be okay over night. Then during the night I started with a headache in the back of my head and neck, and now today have extreme nausea and stomach cramps to the point where I want absolutely nothing to eat or drink for fear of not keeping it down.

I'm just curious if others have experienced a delayed response to Methotrexate like this, or if this might be something else. I also had a steroid injection but that was last Wednesday, basically a week ago. I did call in to the doc and am waiting for a call back and was hoping for some feedback from others with RA as I wait for an answer from the doc. Any encouragement or information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Charity

I have not had nausea from MTX by itself but I did get a bleeding ulcer when I took Ibuprofen while I was also taking the MTX.  I think it was mostly from the NSAID's.  I have had stomach problems for years since I have been taking arthritis meds.  Anyway, I take Prilosec twice a day now and have very few problems.  If you haven't gone to RA Connect yet, please go there.  It is a very active board and you will get lots more replies.  ss

Most people take about 1 mg Folic Acid daily when they are on Methotrexate to help relieve the side effects.  I don't know if this will help but I don't expect it to hurt.  God bless.

I have been on MTX for about 5 months.  I had nausea in the beginning but it went away.  This past week in has gotten really bad again.  It helps if I eat small amounts frequently.  The fatigue is what really gets me for 2-3 days after I take the MTX.   If anyone has any other suggestions, I would love to hear them.  By the way, I am on MTX 15mg, Arava 20mg, Plaquenil 200mg & Mobic 15mg.  Unfortunately, I have only had a small improvement in my symptoms-it is very discouraging!

I do well on the pills but I have heard that many have fewer side effects by using injections instead of pills.  Perhaps that is worth a try.  Also the Rheumatoid Arthritis forum is much more active and you may get more ideas by posting there also.  You don't have to have RA to post there.  I hope you find some way to get relief.  God bless.
