Hi all,

I am not a young adult (I am an old adult, lol)  I have ra and I am the mom of a 15 year old boy that has had JRA for quite a few years.  He is Curently taking Relafen, MTX and Leukovorin.  He has been doing really well for quite some time on 15mg of oral MTX.  The past sev months though he has had 1 finger that is very swollen.  Now in the past month 5 more have become very swollen.  He saw his rheumatologist and she is increasing his MTX to 2o mg by injection to try and get his hands better.  My question is do any of you run frequent low grade fevers?  He use to run a lot of fevers but it has been a very long time since this has happened and now he gets them 3-4 days a week for the past at least few months. It is always in the evening.  His rheumy did not say much when I mentioned that but said maybe he should be checked over by his ped.  He does not have any sore throat, stuffy nose  or other symptoms of illness and his blood work is all good.  I was just going under the assumption that the fevers are JRA related.  So how bout it?  Do any of you get fevers too? and what does your doc have to say about it?

Thanks!!!!

Hi! I am 15 and have JRA and am constantly low grade fevers! It hasn't just arrived when I started the mtx it's been like this for a few years so I'm guessing it's just a part of the JRA. Good luck!

Thanks Katie!

That helps.  He had his 1st injection of the increase dose on Friday night and he looks and feels better already.  I think the fevers were because his jra was acting up.

Thanks for your help!

Pam

I'm far from being a juvenile but I noticed this post and thought I would add a link that you might find interesting.  Still's disease is named as an adult disease but one line in the attached writeup is as follows:  "Still's disease that occurs in children is called systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis."  This might help to explain the fevers.  God bless.

Age 82, diagnosed RA 12/2001, married since 1952, 4 sons no daughters, 4 grandsons 1 granddaughter.  Doing well on Methotrexate and Remicade.

I'm 16 and I too have JRA. When I was first experiencing symptoms, I had a low grade fever, but I don't remember having any other than when I've been sick. I hope your son is doing well!

I have grown up with polyarticular JRA, and am now 26 years old. I still get low-grade fevers. They are more common and frequent in a flare-up. I think it is because in a flare-up, the immune system is overactive and attacking the joints. That is why there is a need for more methotrexate, to suppress the immune system. Unfortunately, methotrexate has its own issues. I hope things get better. Good luck!!!!

I know this is an old post however, I wanted to say I've had JRA since birth with a dx at 6 months old. My childhood was fever after fever. I did reach a remission once and during that time the low grade fevers left. Once the remission left me, the fevers returned. My Dr. at the time believed it was due to the fact that the disease had become active once again. I hope this helpful to anyone that is having trouble with this.

Warm Thoughts,
Sylv
