Well i'm new here,thought i'd better talk to someone because i'm having a hard time understanding what oa really means to me.I was diagnosed 1 yr ago .I developed incredible pain in my lower spine and hips.The doctor told me to lose weight and exercise.I was taking oxycocet and celebrex.So I lost 25lbs and started swimming.The pain went away and I got off the drugs and was feeling good then my shoulder happened.The doctor told me I was having a arthritic flare up because I overdid it and agrivated bone spurs on my shoulder.I felt defeated as he passed me a perscription of celebrex.I worked hard at getting better and now I feel i'm back to square one.Is this what a typical day is gonna look like? Can I expect more of the same . I guess I really want to know what is life gonna be like and where do I go from here.

Hi,I am new here too . I have osteoarthritis,ddd,fibromyalgia,spondylolisthesis. To the first post.....you wanted to know is what you are feeling gonna be for the rest of your life. YES! Esp if you have doctors that are NO HELP ! I have been dealing with this stuff since 04. I am irate that doctors just don't care what you are feeling and how it affects ones life.

I have no life and I am depressed . I have pain and discomfort 24/7 . There is a twist though to my story. I am on Coumadin for life so it is a bit hard to get pain meds that are safe and work and that don't interact with the Coumadin. I can not take anti inflamatories ! It would be to dangerous but most doctors than not would rather see me on something that can kill me than give me something that is safe and would work.

So good luck and I HOPE you find compassionate and understanding doctors! God Bless You ! Angry

I thank you for the reply.I have spent the last while coming to grip with the fact that i'm not going to get better. This will not go away .I am getting worse and there is nothing I can do to stop it.I figured it was like a train that I could somehow jump in front of and stop but I am on the train with no way off.I pushed away the people I care about because I'm getting tired of consoling them.I've spent alot of time and energy making sure they are ok cause they feel bad for me.That's just wrong.Wrong that I should try and make them feel better.They go home and I stay in and hurt knowing that I can't make the pain go away.They don't get it.Xmas is next week.I haven't been able to work since the end of November and have just enough money to pay rent for January.This is my grandson's first Xmas.I can't buy a gift or pick him up. I'm not sure if this is the beginning or the end of my flare up. I seems to be getting worse. Is there any way to stop a flare up?

Paisley, I hope you are seeing a rheumatoid arthritis because few other doctors are really qualified to diagnose or treat the various kinds of arthritis. Your symptoms sound to me like they might be some other type of arthritis that would call for different treatments. If you don't get better soon, I recommend a second opinion with a board-certified rheumatologist. God bless.

Age 82, diagnosed RA 12/2001, married since 1952, 4 sons no daughters, 4 grandsons 1 granddaughter. Doing well on Methotrexate and Remicade.

You will learn how to live with your condition and how to not do more harm than good when you exercise. Ask your doctor for a referral to a Physical Therapist, or get a Personal Trainer to show you how to exercise correctly. The Arthritis Foundation has exercise DVD's that are low impact. OK so Paisley posted in 2008. To Paisley or anyone in her boat, I would say doctors usually take the path of least resistance. If x-rays showed OA, then they go with OA. Instead of, or even in addition to a prescription, ask for a therapy consult. We are on the whole caring people who want to help you understand what is happening and how to help you take charge.

I hope by now, you have seen some relief with this and you've seen a Rheum. Dr. that can be looking for other types of arthritis. This to me sounds like something more than OA. I have 3 forms of arthritis. OA, JRA, and PA along with Fibromyalgia.

Life does change, and along with it comes depression and a feeling of loss. But on the other side, once you work through this part, life can become something much richer to enjoy. Maybe you can't climb a mountain or go deep sea diving but you can enjoy the feel of the warm sun caressing your body or maybe enjoy a nice warm soak in the tub with lavender filling the air. My point: We learn to enjoy the small things in life more than ever.
We could take what we have and keep it negative or we can take it and make it into something we can find some joy from. Is it easy? No. Not at all. It takes hard work and determination to succeed--isn't this true with everything in life?

May the Higher Power bring you comfort today and always....
