Hello everone. I have a problem that I am hoping that someone can give me guidance. I have been diagnosed with arthritis since 1980. I have Ankylosing Spondylitis, OA, RA, spinal stenosis at C3-C4 and C7-C8 (non-operable at this time). On March 5 2005 I hade to stop working as a maintenance electrician in factories and go on disability. I started on Enbrel and it helped a lot then was put on Humira once a week to stop the psoriatic arthritis from getting out of hand. It has taken care of that and has made me feel a whole lot better. I know have an oportunity to become a Maintenance Supervisor at a small plant in the town I live in. It is a 7 minute drive with one stop light, everyone seems easy to get along with, and the Plant Manager is a very nice person. My problem is that I can't do the job without wearing my knee braces and I have not told them about the arthritis. No one has asked, so I didn't bring it up. It would not hinder my doing my job not cause a safety problem. No one has asked why I have not been working since March "05 so I didn't offer. Should I bring this up before it is found out or just let it go and see what happens. I will be working salary and don't want to have the Plant Manager believe he can't trust me when he finds out about the braces. What should I do. I feel fairly certain that if I bring it up I won't get the job. That is just good business sense, even to me.

In my opinion if you can do your job well and without any accommodations from your employer I can see no reason to tell them about it. However, if you will be limited in any way in performing your job then I think it is necessary to let them know. From what I gather there is no need to let them know about your medical condition. Age 82, diagnosed RA 12/2001, married since 1952, 4 sons no daughters, 4 grandsons 1 granddaughter. Doing well on Methotrexate and Remicade.

Was it difficult for you to get on disability? Was it lengthy? If so, I'd consider that factor into my decision. From what I understand it can take a long time to get disability, and I am about to be trying to get on it myself for the first time. I may have a long wait ahead of me. If the job pays well, and it won't conflict with any flares you have or medications that you take, then you'd be wise to do the job. HOwever, won't there be questions when you drug test? You would have to list all of the medications you take. Could be that the report reaches the boss and he asks you why you take this or that.
This is kind of a catch 22 thing really. Being honest could hurt your chances, but again, the Drug testing is commonplace in a plant. I wish you the best no matter what.........

If you can do your job then there should be no issue. You got the job and Im not sure about the legalities of them asking you about your condition. I would say go in there and work your butt off and show them you have skills! There should be no issues if you can hold up your end. If you slow others down or can't get the job done, then you will have to take it from there. I'm sure with your years of experience you could find a way to be helpful if you were hands on or just managing,.
