Arthritis of the knee typically affects people over 50 years of age though it is not exclusive to this age group. This type of arthritis is more common in people who are overweight, and weight loss tends to reduce the symptoms associated with knee arthritis.

When you have arthritis pain and stiffness, finding the proper exercise can be somewhat difficult. Walking may be a good exercise choice for those with arthritis. It helps build strength, maintains joint flexibility, aids in bone health and reduces the risk of osteoporosis.

It may not make sense at first, but when arthritis makes your joints ache all over, a workout of sorts may be in order.  Researchers at the hospital for Special Surgery in New York City studied more than 100 people who had arthritis of the knees.  Half were put on a walking program; the other half did not partake in regular exercise.

Interestingly, after eight weeks, the walkers reported decidedly less pain and less reliance on pain medication.  Also, they were able to walk further without pain in the experiments pretest.

There is also water walking which is usually done in waist - to chest -deep water. You can walk forward, backward, or sideways. You can use varying speeds and long or short steps. Since warm water relaxes the muscles and eases joint stiffness for people with arthritis, the pool should be well heated.

For any kind of water exercise, the Arthritis Foundation recommends a water temperature of 83ºF to 88ºF, comfortably warm, but not hot.

So, you many not be able to find the cure for arthritis yet but certainly you can explore all possibilities to ease the pain and improve the quality of life.

I am 57. I began a program of walking in April 2006 when I was diagnosed with mild osteoarthritic damage in my knees. I gradually worked up to long distances with regular daily walks and longer weekend hikes. At the peak I walked 2 miles in the morning and 2 at noon every weekday.

Those miles plus a strong diet helped me lose 115 pounds by Jan 2007. I lost some muscle mass in the diet and began a program to strengthen my legs. My legs are now very strong.

It took a great deal of work to reach the next milestone. I've been able to replace walking with a slow jogging pace. My legs are strong enough to tolerate up to 3 miles at a time. I don't know how long I'll be able to jog...I'm very careful...I do everything I can to strike the pavement lightly and my knees are fine now. I won't quit until I have to...my noontime jog is one of the high points of my day!

A recent trip to Mayo ruled out RA, PsA, gout and more. So, I'm left with a diagnosis of osteoarthritis with an unusual inflammatory component. It is advancing at a very slow pace.

With that diagnosis in mind, I am unbelievably glad that I lost 115 pounds, began the strengthening program and continued my exercise program. My quality of life is almost as good as someone without OA.

So, I thought I would respond to your post with a resounding..."It worked for me!"...testimonial.

Wow! You lost 115 pounds? That's amazing! Congratulations! I'm inspired. Maybe I should be writing this on my Blackberry while I'm out walking!
