Bonjour. First of all let me apologize for my poor english because I am a french speaking runner. I am looking for some one who can share his experience of having arthritis and keeping running . Actually, for years I have ran 3 times 1 hour a week, but 6 months ago I had to stop because of problems with my feet. Last month, I got a  very clear diagnostic from my doctor: psoriasis arthritis, so no way to re start the jogging, at short/medium term.

Can some one give me some advises?

1) make it sense to run when there is no pain or it will influence the desease negatively

2)  I take mtx and I feel already a huge improvement. It seems that with this desease we need to take at least 6 months the mtx to have a remission. Is it better to wait the remission to re start the jogging ?

3) any other advice on how to train to reduce the risk of having an injury ?

Many thanks.

Hi,

First of all I congratulate on your English. My first language is English and Spanish my second.

Swimming, walking and kayaking are my main forms of exercise and I believe that is part of the reason I am in Methotrexate induced remission. I have mild aches, but have not had a flare in 4 years.  I eat well and watch my weight.  I take 15mg (6pills) of Methotrexate once a week and 1 mg of Folic Acid daily.

I am not an expert on exercise, but have exercised regularly all my life.  At times, I have overdone it, but feel that it never caused any harm to me.  Last year I did a 9 mile hike in the mountains and only had sore thigh muscles for a couple of days.

My older brother was attacked by RA 2 years ago and with lots of medication, regular walking and goal setting, he just walked a marathon in 7.5 hours.  I am 64 and he is 70.  This summer he will walk 100 miles in 7 days to celebrate his 7th year.  i may do 50!

Keep moving!  My mother quit moving and was in a walker at 61 and I refuse to let that happen!  I am off to meet a friend for a long walk on the beach.

Methotrexate induced remission for about 4 years. Also take Folic acid daily.  Retired middle school teacher, married, 2 adult children, 3 grandchildren. Swimming, water aerobics, walking, kayaking and gardening keep me from "rusting".

I am back..... I was unable to walk for a year because of my hurting feet and took up swimming.  How about a bicycle?  After my RA was under control, my feet quit hurting and have not given me any problems in years.

Hope to read about your exercise routine.   Susan

Good morning Susan,

I happy to hear that you don't have any problem anymore with your feet.

Actually I make more than jogging during the week.

2 hours race bike and 3 hours mountain bike but I like jogging and for the time being my feet are so painful that I have difficulties to walk. The fact to hear that you and your brother can walk so much is encouraging me.

For the time being I take 10 mg/week of MTX, 10 mg of folic acid and some vitamin D. I see an improvement but very slowly (too slowly!).

Hi and welcome to the site.  I have RA and psoriasis, actually palmoplantar pustular psoriasis.  As you can tell from the name, it is on my feet and palms.  When it was bad, there was no way I could walk very far let alone run.  That's ok by me because I don't have the stamina for running but I admire people who do.  I am in remission with MTX and Enbrel.  I was almost there with MTX but the Enbrel took away all my pain! The psoriasis foundation has a forum like this one.  Have you visited that site?  Here's the link: www.psoriasis.org  They have a whole section on PA.  I go there often.  ss

Good morning Starshine,

I really hope that you will stay very long in remission.

I have also psoriasis but very local (1 elbow and a bit in the scalp).

I can not run because in one of my ankle is like I have tendonitis.

Did you had the same ? How long did you get MTX and how long both medicine before having remission?

Hi again, I want to answer your questions:  I mostly do floor exercises in my living room.  I use my Wii most of the time and have a "game" called "My Fitness Coach".  I have other exercise DVD's that I use from time to time.  I like the Wii because it is interactive.  You can input all your information and the coach will design a program for you.  If a section is too hard or too easy, you can tell her and she will adjust it for next time.  You can choose your workout time, and days of the week you can commit to it.

10 mg a week of MTX is really a small dose.  I take 15 mg and that is a standard dose.  I have been on MTX for about 18 years and I can't remember how long it took to get the most benefit.  I still had a couple hot spots which didn't go away until I added Enbrel.  The remission happened on the same day I took my first shot!  It was amazing.   I actually was taking Arava instead of MTX at the time but I got the PPP during that time so I had to go back to MTX which cleared up the PPP.  Starshine
