Hi everyone.  I've been reading posts on this forum since January but haven't really posted.  My daughter was diagnosed around January with JIA (probable psoriatic since she has dactylitis although no psoriasis yet).  She is almost 3 now.

Currently she is on Naproxen and oral liquid MTX (7.5mg).   Her rheumatologist wants to increase her MTX dose and switch from oral administration to injection.  So far we haven't had any side effects from the oral but her knee is still pretty contracted.  What has been your experience with this?  Did the injectable give better results?  Are there less side effects with the injection?  What dose are your children on?

Oh, also, when do you all give your children their folic acid?  I'm just wondering if it is better to give the folic acid at the same time as the MTX or if it even matters.

Thank you in advance for any information you can and are willing to provide.

Hi there, with regards to our daughter, she has been on MTX for 3 years now. The oral solution was making her nauseas and sick, because she hated the taste, the symptoms included mouth ulcers aswell this way, we then transferred to tablets which we then crushed into yoghurts etc, or anything she was eating at the time that we could disguise it in, but then we wasted alot because she would then decide she was full, or didn't want whatever we offered, as children do!! We then got offered a final solution which was by injection. A community nurse would come over every friday, and do this, and then my husband then wanted to learn how to do it so we didn't have to wait in for the nurse. He is brilliant, and she has been happier doing it this way. Little side effects. I have always been advised not to give Folic acid on the day of MTX intake. Our daughter is on a 10mg dose every friday, and on the other days she has 2.5mg of folic acid. They have just put the MTX dose up, and she has had a lot of hair loss, mouth ulcers and a few stomach pains but it starting to wear off as her stomach body is getting used to the increase!!

I hope this helps Good Luck

 Louise
