My 5 yo son was dx'ed with poly in April...he is still in his flare and is on naproxen, folic acid and MTX...with a biologic most likely being added next month. He has a history of high fevers (103+) since infancy and they never bothered me...until today.

This morning he awoke with a 103.1 fever, stomach ache, and cough. I took him to the pedi and he is negative for strep but his white count is 5.  (She did not do a nasal swab.) She has a call into the rheumy...but I am a nervous wreck!! I am so scared of the swine flu...beyond scared. He goes to a pre-K camp and is exposed to who knows what there...we have no choice as we both have to work...my benefits cover his meds and doctors. There was just our state's first death from swine flu in the next county over...a 9 yo old little boy with asthma who passed away within two or three days of showing symptoms.

What is the protocal on this? I just want him on tamiflu...am I paranoid? The pedi did say I was NOT overreacting by bringing him in...which makes it even worse. Also, I am assuming no MTX injection tonigt, right? Again, the pedi is talking to the rheumy but ugh! Tell me this gets better with time? I am just freaking out...not my norm.

THANKS and many prayers being said for all of us.

Karen and Alex, 5, poly (among many other things)...and big sis Arianna, 7, ADHD

Your son's history of high fevers reminds me of Still's Disease.  I'm not medically trained but you might want to look into this.  God bless.

Age 82, diagnosed RA 12/2001, married since 1952, 4 sons no daughters, 4 grandsons 1 granddaughter.  Doing well on Methotrexate and Remicade.

With the fever and the cough, I'd be worried about pneumonia, too. My daughter had pneumonia after starting mtx. Her lungs sounded clear at the first visit, but when she still had a fever two days later, they did a chest xray and diagnosed it.

My daughter skipped mtx when she had a fever. I think it is better to err on the side of caution. I hope your son is better today!

Karen, I hope your son is feeling better.  Just to help soothe your concerns, please keep in mind that - yes, H1N1 has caused 87 deaths, but there have been 21,449 cases in the USA so far.  So even if he does get it his chances of survival are quite good.

Also, the biggest concern is the virus mutating.  If it does, this will give your son a better chance to fight it because he will already have some antibodies.

Hope this helped.

Thanks for the responses!

Well it was an eventful weekend...Alex was given Tamiflu as a preventative per the covering rheumy and his pedi.  His fever spiked again Saturday night (over 103) and we were almost off to the ER but it finally broke in between calls from the covering pedi.  (A big shout out here for his doctors and nurses...I was highly impressed by their responsiveness!!  We had six calls within a twelve hour, overnight period.)  The fever spiked again last night (103) so we went back to the pedi this morning...plus his cough got a bit worse.  The pedi decided to give him an antibiotic just to cover all bases as he has a history of respitory infections.

And only you will understand this...my hubby stayed home with Alex today...and a couple of hours ago he got a call from our daughter's camp...there a group of kids who were all displaying a stomach virus...could he come pick her up.  I was thrilled to think...yay...'just a stomach virus!'  So I'm guessing that's what this is because my dear hubby just remembered there was 'something' going around his workplace last week...nothing major unless your immune system is compromised.

Man this new world we are living in is going to make me crazy!!!  Talk about about gray hairs...how do you all do this????

And yes, I am going to ask about Stills but he gets no rash other than eczema once in a while...so who knows?!

Thanks!

Thanks Nancy!  My little guy is doing better today...no fever since Sunday night and his white count was up yesterday.  I'm home with them today but I think he will go to camp for part of the day tomorrow.  Oh notice the 'them' yep, my 7 year old daughter has whatever he had...I was up with her all night with a very stubborn fever...but she is fever free for right now.  Me, I'm exhausted and will probably be next on the list for getting sick.  So I do need to try to take care of me too...something I'm not very good at.  My son has had all sorts of 'struggles' since he was a baby and I tend to focus on that and forget about me until I'm a complete wreck...so thanks for that very good reminder.

Hi Karen,

We have spoke before and compared our childs struggles not related to JRA. My child is dx as PDD-NOS , However  ADD had not been ruled out. The neuro she sees says at this age these 2 dx's overlap, so as she gets older it will become more apparent. This jra is just another challenge we have to face. So I understand what you mean by taking care of everyone and thing before yourself.

For birthdays and holidays I always request a gift certificate for a either a massage, haircut or manicure and pedicure from my husband. Then I'm forced to go and unwind. I always look forward to it. It's already paid for and you don't want it to expire and lose the money so I go and it's great. Hope it's a good day for your family.

Take Care

Nancy

Sorry Nancy, I spend so much time online at different groups I forgot our similiar conncetion.

My daughter is ADHD...of the VERY busy, HIGHLY implusive, and EASILY distracted variety.  She is almost 8 and just finished second grade...we decided to medicate her in November and for us, it was the best decision we ever made.  Her quality of life improved dramatically (mine too LOL) and she finally has friends and self esteem.

For Alex, he is also highly impulsive (lucky me..two of them) and it is really impacting him socially...he will be six in a few weeks and I plan on talking with the pedi about ADHD at his next visit.  But we highly doubt we will medicate him...he's super thin and with the JRA...I just can't think of adding another med right now.  Although it was heartbreaking to hear what happened when my hubby dropped him off at camp this morning...the kids were all saying 'oh Alex is here today'...as in ugh Alex is here today.  He wanted to go today because he's getting bored at home and since my husband was home with our daughter today I figured a couple of hours would do him good...but geez my poor baby did not need that kind of greeting.

My birthday is in August and I will throw out some strong hints to my family as to what mommy really NEEDS for her birthday this year.  Great idea!

All the best!

Hi Karen,

I can only imagine what your days are like. My daughter had a cpt II test which showed mildly impulsive and mildy inattentive so far. I'd say it's more like moderatly impulsive. She finished kindergarten today and will go into first grade in sept in a intergrated classroom. She suffers from clinical anxiety, which right now is a big problem. Socially she has improved dramtically. I know that most people are against medication for add/adhd. I say to each his own. We have to do whats best for our children.

If the day ever comes when the Dr feels medication may help I will investigate and consider it. Right now we just try to get through everyday one day at a time. This JRA is more the focus right now.

Interesting that you're hubby is from L.I. Small world huh? We are in Levittown. Does he still have family here to visit?

Hope your kids are all well now.

Nancy
