We just found a new FDA warning out on Enbryl stating that it increases the risk of cancer in patients who are on it for more than 2 years.  Google this and ask your doctor at the next appt.  We are going on Friday to my daughter's JRA dr. at Duke Hospital.  She has polyarticular JRA and has been on Enbryl since February when she was diagnosed.  She has been doing well on Enbryl and her symptoms are better, but we are not happy with this new announcement!!  I will keep you all updated on what we find out.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Federal regulators on Tuesday added stronger warnings to a group of best-selling drugs used to treat arthritis and other inflammatory diseases, saying they can increase the risk of cancer in children and adolescents.

After more than a year of review, Food and Drug Administration scientists said the drugs appear to increase the risk of cancer after they are used beyond 2 1/2 years. The agency studied several dozen reports of cancer in children taking the drugs, some of which were fatal. Half of the cases were lymphomas, a cancer that attacks the immune system.

Here's some more information...while still scary, I really don't think there is anything 'new' here...and lots of information still unknown and/or unclear.  My son is starting Enbrel this week...

Prayers for all of us using there drugs for our kiddos.

This is 'new':

"After more than a year of review, Food and Drug Administration scientists said the drugs appear to increase the risk of cancer after they are used beyond 2 1/2 years."

I've never seen a time frame until this review.

My understanding is that this was review - so they compiled existing data and made a conclusion. The link you posted is the one I found with the most info so far.

There may be a 'full report' on the FDA site somewhere, but I think that link is pretty thorough.

I'm sorry this news had to break at this time for your situation, but you are right that most of it has been known for awhile. I think the '2 1/2 years' is good information - you sort of have that long before you seriously, seriously have to decide if the risk is worth the benefit. By then, you would have clearly experienced what the benefits are.
