Im Rachael, 15, from england, and was diagnosed with Juvenile Idiopathic arthritis, which is polyarticular in June of this year. Thought I would post here to parents as the teen board is really inactive!
After being back on a IV drip for a few days, im feeling much better and hoping the MTX will kick in soon enough!

I was just wondering, since arthritis is an auto-immune disease, and my immune system may be a bit crazy what should I look out for, as in stuff not to do, take, and to avoid!

I'm scared of getting stupid stuff like flu, incase it gets really hard for my body to fight it off, and I just read a thread about unpasteurized milk making someone really sick.. and now my mind is working overtime, thinking could simple illness really put me in danger?!

Thanks in advance 4 ur replys x

Hi,
My son is on MTX, sulfasalazine and pred right now. (Hoping to taper off the pred in the next month or so) His rheum. advised flu shot, and only "non-live" vaccines.

I guess my response would be... don't panic.  Do every thing you can to control the things within your reach.  Flu shots and making sure you are staying as healthy as possible.  Lots of hand washing, getting enough rest, staying away from others who are sick etc.  You aren't going to be able to avoid everything but just make sure you immune system is working as well as possible.  Then you cross your fingers!  Hang in there!

I know how you must be feeling with all of the things you are dealing with being diagnosed with JA. I am glad that my son is not old enough to understand everything that is going on yet since he is only 4. Just keep your head up and try not to worry about it to much. Avoiding being around others that are sick is a really good idea. ALso the best way to avoid germs is handwashing. I would also try to be sure to talk to your parents if there are alot of people in school that are sick and possibly get your homework until things calm back down at school. I will keep you in my prayers.
