Hi all,

My DD is almost 5 and was recently diagnosed with pauciarticular JRA (knees only). Our ped rheum started her on naprosyn suspension, plus prevacid to prevent stomach problems (family history of ulcers).

I have noticed that DD is constantly clearing her throat for the last couple of weeks since starting the meds. It's driving me bonkers! I can't figure out if it's the naprosyn irritating her throat and/or causing GERD, or if the prevacid is perhaps not doing its job well enough.

I have been googling side effects for both but I'm not finding throat irritation. It's seriously driving us insane... all day long she is going MMMHMMMMM MHHHMMMMMMMM. It's to the point I have to wonder if what she is doing will become some sort of tic!

The naprosyn is just a nasty, nasty suspension. Tastes horrible and is really sticky. Could be the problem. I wonder if I'll be able to get her to swallow a pill anytime soon?

Jennifer

I don't know anything about throat irritation, sorry, but I was able to teach my son to swallow pills when he was 4.  If you google something like "how to teach a child to swallow pills"  you'll get a bunch of sites that can help you.  It's not hard, actually.  You start by having your child swallow one ice cream sprinkle, and then work up in size.  He can swalow small and medium sized pills now, and it had made our life much easier.  Just a thought.  Hope you get the throat clearing issue sorted out soon.

Thanks MoK. Funny you mention that, because I was already googling about when kids typically can swallow a pill. Might ask the rheumatologist next time we see her (Oct) if we can try pills instead of the suspension. It really is nasty!

She also hates the Prevacid quick-dissolve tabs. I wonder if they are contributing rather than helping.
