I just saw a young knee surgeon at a prestigious clinic who told me, "Total knee replacements are for pain relief only and do not improve function".

This sounds like bull cookies to me. Has anyone else heard this, that TKRs don't improve function? Was this guy just blowing me off for some reason?

I'm asking around because after 15 years of orthos telling me I could have a knee replacement anytime, I finally go to Dr. FancyPants at Schmancy Clinic and he tells me the exact opposite! It was like a Twilight Zone episode.

Hello-

After a total knee:

You can't hold your foot still and rotate your knee as before, most people can't kneel, and flexion of a total knee is less than a natural knee. That aside, if you have knee arthritis, you probably can't do these things anyway, and walking, going up and down stairs, getting up and down from seated positions, etc are very painful. SO, eliminating pain and stiffness is a God send -making it possible to be active once more. I think this Dr was just saying that a biologic, arthritis free knee beats a replaced knee. If you're willing to work hard at rehab post op, you'll be glad you had the surgery.
