Newly diagnosed with psA and will start Remicade within the next 2 weeks.  Anyone with Remicade/infusion therapies:  would you please share your experiences to help me prepare?

I haven't experienced this one yet. You might want to re-post this over at RA Connect. That's where everyone is...even us with PsA.

Hi Mindy,

I'm from the RA connect board and I just saw your post on the RA meds thread.

I just have plain ole RA, but I started Remicade in January.  I was given a loading dose of three infusions in 6 weeks, the initial one, then two weeks later, then 4 weeks later.  Then I've been scheduled for every 7 or 8 weeks.

The improvement for me has been dramatic.  I never had a lot of swelling or pain since I'm older now, but the stiffness and fatigue are overwhelming.  In the week before my scheduled infusion, I find myself reaching for my cane and creaking and groaning at every step.  Then afterwards it takes about a week before I feel like my old self again, running errands, going out with friends, and enjoying my life.

The infusion is usually given in your healthiest vein near the back of your wrist.  The technicians are very adept at this procedure and it only takes a minute.  Then they tape the needle to your arm, hook up the IV and you can sit, or recline, or watch TV or read for about 2 hours.  My infusionist tells jokes and gives us all candy to keep us occupied.  The first and second infusions will take a little longer while they carefully observe you for an allergic reaction.  They have benadryl and other drugs handy just in case.   If you do well with the first two then you'll be able to get the infusions done in exactly 2 hours.

My rheumy is in the next room which is very nice, and he checks on me frequently.  He has instructed me to premedicate an hour before my appointment with claritin and Tylenol.

I hope it works as well for you as it does for me.

Hugs,

Gramma Ellie

Thank you for the info.!  I am very optimistic that this treatment will help.  I am also facing a joint replacement of a joint replaced in Jan. 2007.  Feet and additional parts of hands need fusion/"overhaul".    I am very grateful to have health insurance and access to these options.

THANK YOU!
