I was recently diagnosed with osteoarthritis.  It first showed up in my hands and knees.  However, this past weekend I had what I think is a flare up.  I had some short nights of sleep (5-6 hours) and by Friday I wasn't feeling well at all, and every joint in my body, especially my back, was aching terribly.  No fever or other symptoms, just aching.  Is this what's considered a "flare up"?  I took anti-inflammatories over the weekend off and on, and by Monday I was feeling much better.  Anyone else have this happen?  Thanks, Jane

Welcome to the board.  Multiple joint problems showing up suddenly sounds more like Rheumatoid Arthritis than Osteoarthritis.  I hope you are being seen by a rheumatologist because few other doctors are really qualified to either diagnose or treat arthritis problems.  A second opinion might be in order.

Yes, that sounds like a flare with RA but I don't know with OA.  I hope you find some way to get relief.  You are welcome to post on the RA forum where there is more action and you are more likely to get responses.  God bless.

Age 82, diagnosed RA 12/2001, married since 1952, 4 sons no daughters, 4 grandsons 1 granddaughter.  Doing well on Methotrexate and Remicade.

Welcome to the site.  I agree with Grandpavan.  You will find lots of support if you come over to RA Connect. ss

Hi Jane,

I also have osteoarthritis but mine is inflammatory. I know that sound wrong because traditionally it was thought that Rheumatoid was Inflammatory and Osteo was not but mine arthritis is called Inflammatory Osteoarthritis. I have all the same flares with swelling, heat in joints along with pain and severe fatigue that go with RA but without the joint damage. I am currently on a regime of Plaquinil and Savella and for the first time in 4 years I am better. Not "fixed" but tolorably better. My flares are shorter and not as severe anyway, lol. Anyway if you are having any kind of flare that is severe get to your DR and have him set you up with a Rheumatologist appt. Anti-inflammatory meds like Ibuprofen and Naproxen are common for those of us who have any kind of Inflammatory condition but there are lots of other things that they can do to help make your life better.

God bless and keep you,
Bette

Current DX: Inflammatory Ostearthritis (apparently this is not an oxymoron), IBS, Fibro.
Current Meds & what they are for: Plaquinil (arthritis)Triamterene/Hctz (decrease water retention), Dicyclomine (IBS), Ropinirole (Restless Leg), Lexipro (AntiDepressant), Allopurinol (Uric Acid Reducer), Lortab (Pain), Flexiril (Muscle spasms), Savella (Fibromyalgia), Omeprazole DR (decrease stomach acid), Naproxen Sodium (Anti-inflammatory), Omega 3 Fish Oil (anti-inflammatory), Super B-Complex, Concentrated Black Cherry (Uric Acid Reducer).
