The Best States For Health Care

Brian Wingfield and Aleksandra Kulczuga, 10.09.09, 10:40 AM EDT

Vermont, Iowa and Hawaii are at the top and Mississippi and Oklahoma are the worst, according to a new report.

A new report about the state of the nation's health care system is providing grist for lawmakers advocating for health care reform on Capitol Hill.

According to the study, released Thursday by the New York-based Commonwealth Fund, health care costs and insurance coverage vary significantly from state to state. No surprise there, but the report also points out that insurance coverage among adults under age 65 is "eroding." . . .

. . . Perhaps the most interesting findings from the study are not the rankings themselves, but what could be achieved if all states performed at the level of those at the top. According to the report, an improvement of this magnitude could insure an additional 29 million people, lower preventable deaths and save at least $5 billion annually by preventing hospital readmissions.

I live in Iowa so I'm pleased we're rated so high on that group of data.  But I'm also surprised, since Iowa's Medicare payments to doctors/facilities are lower than surrounding states.  This has been a big issue when discussing increasing the number of doctors here, especially since Iowa also has an "older" than average population.  Our senators have tried to get the payments increased with no success so far.  It's something like a "cost-of-living" figure but our state shouldn't be any different than MO, or NE, etc. It could affect border towns since a doctor may prefer Omaha, NE instead of Council Bluffs, IA, etc. It is especially hard to keep experienced doctors in the rural areas.  But at least specialists in Des Moines or Iowa City aren't too far away for most of us. - Teri

RA+ 2000. Mtx since 2007. Also Prilosec, Ibu, folic acid, etc. Added Arava and Plaquenil as we're decreasing the mtx dose.
