Hobbled around the grocery store yesterday with my son, and we did a huge shopping.
In the checkout line, I noticed the bagger--a young woman--with wrist splints on--and asked her if it was arthritis. She said yes, arthritis, so I asked if it was Rheumatoid. She said yes, and she wears the braces when she works so as not to further injure her wrists. I said I understood, as I have them, too, and have RA.
She was such a sweet-spirited young woman and so darling! I wish I'd had time to give her my name and # so we could talk or go for coffee or something. I don't know if she has any support, but she seems very joyful, so maybe. I also want to give her this message board; however, being as it was so busy, and there was a long line of customers behind me waiting to cash out, I didn't delay her.
I will look for her in the near future and give her this site. God willing, I will find her, and I'll share with her. She just has this sweet disposition, and I know she'd be able to be not only blessed by this site, but be a blessing to it as well.
I'll let you know when I find her. (God will lead!) I don't know anyone in this area with RA. So, it would be nice to have a friend who understands and one I could maybe encourage, too.
Remember, God loves you and so do I! Hugs!
Love and hugs,
Rev. Nancy

It's hard not to feel both good and sad for the young lady who is hard at work bagging groceries. It's a fun job as a kid, but I'm sure the pain of RA makes it a huge challenge.
Thanks for sharing the story. It inspires me. And I pray that God resolves her pain.
May God Bless,
captex
I'm off Prednisone! and off Bactrim, currently taking Atenenol, Albuterol, Glipizide, Lozol, NOMORE NSAIDS and trying to lose the 30+lbs that I gained recently from Prednisone. Just added Arava. Diagnosed with RA in 1982. Fighting ILD. I'm dealing with my Diabetes and I've only begun to truely understand RA.

Hi, I saw your post and thought what are the odds, I just e-mailed Schnucks grocery store yesterday and told them they need to start a new store policy of having the baggers keep their mouths shut, LOL, I lways get water refills and tell the cashier "I have 2 refills" or how many and then the Bagger says to the cashier "did you get those refills?" Like I wouldn't tell her so making me out to be a thief or liar, I understand he could just be che##### but it needs to be phrased differently than making customer out to be criminal. Look you're a bagger not the gestapo, it was the way he said it too, ya I told Schnucks to tell the baggers to keep mouths shut or hire security for the fights they will cause!! I,m the most easy going person there is, but that store is getting on my nerves. ha, sorry to have gotten OT of your post but I thought what are the odds. Hey you see the ###? I just edited and it still came out with those there, strange. Oh wanted to add they called me few hours later about it, nice of them to know they read comments.

Rev Nancy, my last job for seven years was front end manager/trainer for a grocery chain. Many days I worked one handed che##### people out, because I had bursitis and finger pain that I know now to be the onset of some of my lupus and RA. We laughed and called it "checkers elbow"....That's the most grueling task in the world che#####, bagging....I was on my feet 9 hours a day without relief mats and if I wasn't training I was the head cashier che##### out express and making sure everyone else was doing their job...young people have no longivity in working so I had a new crew all the times...
I certainly hope you find her and she comes here., She'll get tons of understanding from me personally...At the store I worked for, the end of the flat carts came down and you checked and unloaded at the same time, bagged and reloaded the cart by yourself....She'll wear herself out...Bless her heart!

Yes, I felt bad for this young lady having to do that job with RA. I couldn't do it! Bagging is one of the hardest jobs, and even healthy, I wouldn't want it! Too heavy and too much! My son does all the lifting and such for me. I tried to pick up a jar of peanut butter and dropped it! Thankfully, it was plastic, lol. Son said, "Ma, I'm here to help, so let me help".So, I got out of the way, lol.
As for baggers who talk, I never mind as long as they keep bagging. I keep going, too, as I'm aware of other people waiting behind me in line.
I like to thank the checkout person and the bagger on the way out; they do a good job and it's hard work. I appreciate they do that heavy stuff for me. I can't do it, and it really speeds things up. Most are very kind and hard-working people, and I for one am happy to say hello or a kind word. I know what it's like to do heavy work, and it's always nice when someone appreciates you or talks to you like you're a real person and not a servant or slave.
I will find this young lady again, I'm sure; though, it may take some time, as I don't do a weekly shopping. I usually do it monthly, but I may end up there again sooner this time, as I didn't finish it all. I'll let you know what happens.
Love and hugs,
Rev. Nancy

Hi, I think (maybe) my telling the baggers to shut up was misunderstood, I didn't mean as in not chat, I meant as them saying "did you pay for that?' or them asking the cashier " did you ring up this or that?" they need to phrase it without insulting the customers, same store I had a bagger, I asked for a price check as it rang up regular price and it was on clearance, anyway after waiting an hour for someone to check price bagger goes "Oh just give it to him" NO!!! you are not giving me anything, I am paying for it but at the price your store states it is, I don't see that creep anymore. I just meant baggers should not insult customers.

Rev Nancy:
Your post touched my heart, as just two weeks ago in Target in OKC the lady who checked me out while I was with my oldest son also had RA.
I asked her if she minded if I asked a personal question, she said NO, I asked if she had RA and her answer was YES, she said that she was retired, but had to come back to work to have the money to pay for insurance to pay for her drugs. She said she had been dxd since the 80's and had taken every drug to date except Rituxian and the new Simpanoi (sp).
We shared a moment that only the two of us could understand, she was probably in her late 60's early 70's and standing on her feet 8 plus hours a day for insurance. Her fingers were drawn, her knucles were large and she showed me how her feet were swollen and it was about noon. So on the way home I asked my son to stop, give thanks, and say a prayer for that nameless woman whom I will probably never see again, but I know her disease.
My son asked how did I know that she had RA? I said she had the look.........
Always,
Lulu
I may have RA but RA does not have ME!!!

Hi all, in response to Lulus post, about that worker, there is alot of help, I think alot of people just do not look for it or apply for it etc, that's too bad, you do not even have to apply for social security disability to be classified as disabled in your state, which can lead to med coverage and rx coverage etc, the internet has alot of great help if people use it to look up help I'm not saying in her case but just as a general comment as it seems her situation is maybe kinda self induced, believe me no one will come kno##### on your door to see what help they can offer, YOU have to do it yourself..

Good news! Found that bagger today--had a few things to pick up--and gave her my email addy and the arthritis.org site. I didn't know the exact message board site, but I told her to come to arthritis.org. If she emails, I'll give her more specific info. It was very busy, and she remembered my son and was so sweet to him and me. Nice woman! Bless her! What a great attitude!
Ronald, I apologize if I misunderstood you, hon. Didn't mean to, but it happens. I hope you'll forgive me? Thank you!
Lulu, so nice of you and your son to pray for that woman! God bless you, and I'm sending one up for her, too. You set a good example for your son, as well.
I'll let you know if she emails; she'd be a wonderful addition here, and she could probably use this site!
P.S. Oh, I used a martcart, as my grocery store calls them. Finally swallowed my foolish pride and asked for one. Scary at first--never used one before--but sooo very glad I did! What a blessing; although, it's not adjustable, so the steering is so far from my arms I had to bend forward to reach, thus hurting my neck, shoulders, and back! Oh well,l can't have everything. Did save my lower back and legs, so I guess I shouldn't complain. I didn't have to walk around the store, and my son did all the heavy stuff, bless him!
Love and hugs,
Rev. Nancy

Hi, thanks, it's just sometimes when writing these posts you don't want to write a book that no one will read, so some of the details get left out or not clear enough, and I had some guy from Schnucks call about my e-mail, which was nice, as you wonder if anyone reads them , LOL, no real good way around it as he said if they ask the customer then alot of people take that as confrontational and get mad, so they just ask the cashier, which I can understand, I said maybe just have the cashier ask is anything else in your cart? it's kinda a no win situation I guess, but in this case it was kinda they way he said it also.
