After only two years I had another heart attack last week. Hurt real bad this time and I think even the paramedics were alittle concerned about getting me to the hospital fast enuff. I have been on daily dose of 5mg of prednisone for at least 3 years could this be the cause? What about enbrel been on that along time also? signed depressed, frustrated and yet grateful

I posted this earlier today but cannot find it, so if you answered previously please do so again.

No advice, just that I am sorry you had another one. I know RA by itself increases your risk of a heart attack to the same level as those with diabetes, which is pretty high compared to the rest of the population. Are you taking baby aspirin?

Hi, I didn't see anything about prednisone causing problems of that sort except at high dosage and then quit all at once, could cause heart palpitations, so that is highly unlikey, could be the RA itself or Enbrel which on their site say can cause heart failure or worsening of heart failure. or could be RA/Enbrel together, heart trouble from the RA already existing and Enbrel pushed it over the edge. Or of course it could be unrelated to any of those and be from something else.

Hi Al,

I am so sorry to hear about this. I hope that you are beginning to recover. I referred to the current guidelines of the ACR.

The following is a contraindication for Enbrel (and all other anti-tnf drugs - remicade, humira and a couple of the new ones). I'm not sure if this applies to you.

"Cardiac
Moderate to severe heart failure (NYHA III or IV) and left ventricular ejection fraction < 50%"

I hope you feel better soon.

I'm sorry about your heart attacks. I've never had one and I'd like to keep it that way. My wife is very careful with what we eat to keep it low sodium and low in the bad fats. I also drink a cup of pomegranate juice every day to help clean out my arteries. I don't think the medications for RA do much to increase the risk of a heart attack. Please check with your doctor about what dietary changes you should make to reduce the risk of another heart attack. I hope you recover quickly and never have another one. God bless.

Age 82, diagnosed RA 12/2001, married since 1952, 4 sons no daughters, 4 grandsons 1 granddaughter.  Doing well on Methotrexate and Remicade.

I can't add much to this but I had my first last Xmas and was told the next one I will really know about it.
Great.

I have been told that because of RA my risks are greater but my real risk factor is in smoking..
I know, I know.

Read this new posting that has popped up today.

http://community.arthritis.org/forums/Topic4253391-1831-1.aspx

The article seems to go both ways on the subject.

Hope this sheds a little light on your question.

I'm off Prednisone! and off Bactrim, currently taking Atenenol, Albuterol, Glipizide, Lozol, NOMORE NSAIDS and trying to lose the 30+lbs that I gained recently from Prednisone. Just added Arava. Diagnosed with RA in 1982. Fighting ILD. I'm dealing with my Diabetes and I've only begun to truely understand RA.

Hi Al,

I hope you are feeling O.K. now? I've heard that the pain is just awful.

Two attacks in two years seems unusual. What does your cardiologist think caused it? Have you seen your rheumatologist lately?

The only thing I've heard about prednisone and heart attacks is that suddenly stopping can possibly cause heart trouble, even a heart attack.

Hope you can take it easy for a while and recover.

Hugs,
Gramma Ellie
