I've had a cold for about 2 weeks and have been coughing up phlegm for about 10-11 days. It's still clear and I'm not concerned, I just don't know when to call the doc. The coughing has caused terrible ribcage pain - ouch! I can't wait for this one to be over!
I don't want to go if I don't have to, so I am just wondering at what point does it warrant a doctor's visit?
Liz

Hi Liz,
If I were you, I'd call the doctor. My doctor said any cold symptoms that last more than 7 or 8 days need to be checked out. It doesn't have to be pneumonia for you to get treated.

If my cold last longer then 7 days or if I get the symptoms of bronchitis like hard nonstoping barking cough, and shortness of breath then I go to the doctor then. My rheumy told me that with biologics I could run into trouble with infections so any kind of infection to goto my GP and demand antibiotics. Right now I am on anitboitics because my cold turned into bronchitis again. This is the fourth time that I have had bronchitis in nine months. All I know is that I am sick of being sick. I see my rheumy on Dec. 01 and I am going to talk to him about trying a different biologic because of the bronchitis. I hope that you are feeling better soon.

If I were in your place I would sure call the doctor's office and at least see what they say about going in for treatment. I hope you get over it soon. God bless.

I've had a heavy chest for close on six weeks now, things seem to be a little better.
Being a bloke I was waiting for the next step (before going to the docs) but that has not happened.

Hey Liz
Didn't you just recently say something about Lupus in your dx? If you have a high ANA and get a long lasting cold you really should see the doctor. Lupus has a tendency to treat a long acting cold as pneumonia and that can be a very serious complication of lupus. Not sure at all how this can work only that my most recent visit require a swab from my throat and showed I have a touch of strep. So I am on strong antibiotics. THey said they wanted to prevent any pnuemonitis from beginning...May be worth a visit sweetie! Lupus is kind of nasty with colds...
Will keep you in my prayers...Love and hugs

Good morning Liz,
When it comes to lung issues I'm now hypersensitive. My advise to you is to consult with your doctor. I can't say what caused my ILD, but I can say that two+ years later I'm still dealing with it. Your doctor might check for crackles in your lungs to begin with and take x-rays if they think it's appropriate.
I wish that I had taken my coughing issues with my PCP a whole lot earlier.
Good Luck,
captex
I'm off Prednisone! and off Bactrim, currently taking Atenenol, Albuterol, Glipizide, Lozol, NOMORE NSAIDS and trying to lose the 30+lbs that I gained recently from Prednisone. Just added Arava. Diagnosed with RA in 1982. Fighting ILD. I'm dealing with my Diabetes and I've only begun to truely understand RA.
