I've been peeling my lips to rawness from the spices on the shrimp I ate over the weekend. Now the inside of the mouth is peeling and raw...I have tried everything from carmex, to pure olive oil...I can't seem to heal this up or help it...Do any of you know what would help me? I hate to whine and I know that are daily pain is much worse than a case of peeling lips but this is so bothersome and my mouth is so dry...I can't keep my dentures in lately without so much dryness and pain...ICKY....

HELP! LOL

Straight vaseline works well. Avoid anything with menthol in it, as it can worsen dryness. Stop picking !

I get mouth sores, probably herpes simplex or fever blisters. Lysine clears them up quickly. I have no idea if your situation is anything similar. Perhaps a pharmacist could recommend something. I hope you get it fixed. God bless.

OOPS, I guess I'd better stop using Carmex then.

I have the same problem, Bekah. Mine comes and goes for no particular reason, but lately the Sjogrens has been particularly bad. My nose, mouth, lips and eyes are all dry and irritated.

Vaseline doesn't do much for me, but I see my dentist next week and will see if he has any recommendations.

Hope yours heals up soon.

Hugs,
Gramma Ellie

Interesting post. This has been happening to me as well along with what feels like a burnt tongue. Kinda like after eating something too hot like a hot slice of pizza. I've found that drinking soft drinks such as my favorite, Diet Mountain Dew, only makes it worse so I'm been keeping a bottle of water near by and just drinking clear water. I've been concerned that this might all be due to the recent increase in methotrexate.
Thanks for the topic.
God bless,
Bob

LOL Liz you got me on that one...I was peeling..Its a bad habit..I tried some vaseline and it worked somewhat better than the oils..

GrandpaVan, mom gets the herpes sores, like cold sores and fever blisters too...She uses that new stuff that's out and I can't think of the name of it but will ask her about it for you...

Gramma Ellie, my nose every morning is so dry and sore that it hurts. Doc said not to use nasal sprays if I am stopped up because they really hurt the sjogrens. Have you experienced that? And thanks for asking your dentist.

Bob, yes, yes, the burnt tongue. Like if I drink coffee that's too hot..That has been really troubling. I found drinking the V8 Fusion juice helps a little if I stay away from the citrus type. I've switched to arizona green tea with honey..Very helpful...

My rhuemy prescribed Nystatin Oral Suspension to swish and swallow up to 4 times daily. It works wonders and even tastes ok.....in fact, I'm swishing now. My asthma inhaler causes a thrush-like problem in my mouth from time to time......as well as spicey food, etc. I use Vaseline and/or a good chapstick....like lip butter on my lips.

I have RA and Sjogren's Syndrome.

Keep us posted, Bekah.

Take care.

Have you tried just plain saline spray for your nose? There is a brand called Ocean, and most pharmacies carry their own brand at lower prices. I use this when my sinuses get dry.

Is there any chance you are allergic to shrimp?

Take care,
Lisa

Interesting.
Bob S- I had the same thing with the MTX, when I went on it I couldn't drink soda from a can anymore because it felt like acid was eating my throat! I also starting feeling that foods were extra spicy (and they weren't). And today, after being on MTX and Enbrel, I had pineapple and had the SAME thing with the tongue, like I burned it off!
I'm hoping it will fade with time...I love pineapple. Although it has been healthier without the soda

Im more inclined to think it's the Zattarians crab, shrimp and crawfish boil seasoning that hurts me. I've lived on Shrimp dishes my whole life being from Louisiana and only when there are crawfish and shrimp boils do I get irritation, however, this time was bad irritation, worse ever....I hope I'm not allergic to shrimp..EEK....I am going to try some shrimp gumbo this weekend and that will tell me...

You may have a food allergy to the added ingredients. I have a lot of problems with MSG, Nitrates, Processed foods, and dyes. I was tested this past summer throughly.

As far as the SS, I have started using the humidifer in the winter, I have had a plethra of other problems as well. My vasculitis is giving me fits and I have to go to a neprologist (sp) soon, so another prayer has been added to my daily load.

But we will stay strong!

Always,

Lulu

This is an interesting topic. I was diagnosed with RA only five months ago. However, seven years ago I went through two periods where I experienced severe allergic type reactions inside my mouth. It was if my tongue and the sides of my mouth were on fire and it stayed that way for months. I also noticed some slight swelling of the tongue and inside my mouth and throat, not like anaphylactic shock, but more like irritation. I do not eat spicy foods, so my diet is really quite bland.

I went to two ENT specialists, an allergist and an internist. No one could tell me what it was. The allergist finally ran extensive allergy tests and many showed up positive. However, when he prescribed allergy medicine it did nothing to help. I just toughed it out. I was finally referred to an endocrinologist. He was the most helpful. However, by this time some of the symptoms were starting to lessen. He ran labs over several months. The things that had been out of range returned to normal. He checked for lupus and RA, but results were negative. He finally told me that something had impacted my immune system, that was why I tested positive for allergies, but the meds would not help. After about six months it resolved itself and I was no longer having the symptoms. However, from time to time I will still get irritations inside my mouth.

My dentist suggested using the most mild formulas of toothpaste. They actually told me the toothpaste with whitening was too strong and causing an exfoliation of the lining of my mouth.

I also experienced very dry lips. I found some of the organic type of lip balms to be very helpful.

I wonder now, if this was a forerunner of the RA I have now been diagnosed with. And, it did happen after a very stressful period of quitting my corporate job I had held for a long time and then trying to get my small business up and running. Who knows.

I think it depends on the type of soda. With the diet drinks you have to be cautious with aspartame and with a citrus flavored drink, the citrus ingredient(s) would be the concern.

What's interesting is regular Coke is one of the beverages I could drink and if it couldn't be ice cold. It seemed to calm the burning on the tongue and inside my mouth.

Also, for many years I've had people tell me that going through chemo they experience sores or irritations in the mouth and on the tongue. People will ask for Coca-Cola syrup, before it is mixed. The ingredients in the syrup are apparently very helpful for these types of symptoms.

I just stumbled on this thread while looking for Bekah (how are you?). Many years ago, I went through a terrible period of burning tongue, patchy red skin around my mouth and eyes. The skin around my eyes actually turned into a staph infection. I was a mess. Doctor gave me cream for the skin - turned out I was allergic to that and it made it worse. Dentist suggested the baking soda toothpaste - which I still use. She also recommended an allergist. He ran all sorts of tests and had me do a food diary. Turned out I was allergic to two pages worth of stuff -single spaced! The food diary led him to suggest I stop eating chicken, eggs, milk, and beef. With the diet change, the burning tongue went away. My list of allergies has grown tremendously over the years - now includes a page of medications as well as all the other stuff. I've lost the original list! I know I had to quit all eye makeup, all gum chewing as well as other things I used to enjoy. The chicken seemed to be the worst. I can still have a chicken dinner occasionally and my mouth will burn slightly the next day, but it is not constant anymore and the skin issue has gone away. Bekah - I sure hope for your sake it's not the shrimp! I love the stuff and could eat it every day! I do remember once I bought a large shrimp salad at Costco - delicious big shrimps. Because I live alone, I had some of the salad every day for dinner for about three days in a row. I got the burning tongue at that time. Since then, however, I've eaten a lot of shrimp with no reaction - think it was just too much that time. I'd say do a food diary. This may have nothing to do with RA meds.

No great advice, just maybe try lanolin (Lansinoh brand is sold at most drug stores). It comes out thick but warms up in your fingers, is food-grade, and provides a better barrier than most ointments/creams.
