Ankle Fusion that resulted in a nonunion requiring more surgery
Posted by: Jacqui Hernandez on February 3, 2010 at 1:16AM EST
Hi, I had an ankle fusion in April 2009 and it didn't fuse. I am going to have surgery again in Feb 2010. No one is sure why this happened? Has anyone had this problem and was the 'redo' successful? I'm super anxious that this is going to be a never ending problem. Thanks...

My surgery was a success by the foot surgery's standards but I ended up with atrophy in my calf. It's doubtful that it'll ever be better.

I had ankle surgery (tendon transfer plus calcaneal osteotomy, which involved cutting the heel bone and reattaching it in a different alignment) in Syracuse, NY. No problem healing, though it was a long time before I got back to full activity, and I still have some problems in my feet. I think they usually put in some bone growth stimulator to help the fusion. Another thing I did (have no way to know if it helped but think it might have), I ordered supplements from www.makemeheal.com that are specifically geared to help with healing after surgery, cut down on bruising, etc. I healed really well.
I had worn a rigid AFO (ankle-foot orthotic) for most of the 3 years before that, and only when that didn't work did I go for the surgery. I have no regrets about that, it made my ankle SO much more stable! My calf muscles did atrophy with the AFO (though I didn't sleep with it) but it came back after ward with exercise. I use a recumbent bike for exercise (when I can make myself do it), and before I could do that, I had a little Chattanooga pedal exerciser. The tendon I had reinforced was the posterior tibial tendon. If you happen to be in the NY state area and want to know where I went, email me at egalo"at"stlawu.edu
