Any suggestions regarding this pain after TKR
Posted by: Rachelle Kuschner on June 14, 2009 at 11:26AM EST

Can anyone out there offer some words of advice?

I had a tkr 12 weeks ago. For six weeks I was great. I have wonderful mobility with the knee. At six weeks it started going downhill. When I stand up from a sitting or lying position, the pain is so excruciating. It is a 20 on a scale from one to ten. It goes down to a three or four after about eight or ten steps. The pain is worse every day. They have ruled out my back, which I think he wanted to blame it on and the xrays look fine. I see the surgeon again this week and I think he will recommend a bone scan. I have a cementless prothesis in which the bone is supposed to grow over the knee....I dont' know what the deal is. The pain is across the bottom of the knee and worsens day by day. I have gone back to crutches. The pity of it all is, before surgery I could walk pain free. It was only when I twisted or turned in bed that it was bad. Told it was bone on bone, and after trying a scope in December, I decided it was only going to get worse and that in this good shape, my recovery would be quick......and it was....just great up until six weeks. I am now a virtual cripple. Please help me if you can. My doctor says he will find the cause and it cannot hide. I am desperate.

Hi Rachelle..I had 3 TKR's...one was bone on bone also, that one needed a revision..
I always said, the hardest part after a TKR, was sitting..because we are really bending the knee...

The bone scan is the best way to see whats wrong, are you still doing any exercises at home, like leg lifts? I always did those on the bed, or the couch. The pain is at its worst, when u stand up?..How is it sitting?
Hope you are getting in to see the ortho, ASAP....to find out whats going on

Rachel,

I'm so sorry to hear you're having this pain with your TKR.

I had both my knees replaced in 2000. They were cemented though, and so far, knock on wood, I haven't had any problems.

hmm, seems like something may have happened around the sixth week after surgery. A bone scan may be the only way to know what's going on with your knee. it's good you're getting in to see the surgeon this week, hopefully, the problem can be easily identified and quickly treated so you can throw away those crutches and be pain free.

Let us know how things turn out. You might consider posting on the RA forum, that's where Pat and I generally hang out.

Good luck to you and take care.

Thank you all for your words of comfort. i tried to see the doctor earlier than Wed. because the pain today is worse than ever. He was out today and in surgery all day tomorrow, so Wed. it is. My mom met someone who has a brother. His tkr was so painful and like me, showed no sign of infection. They scoped him and found infection....cleaned it out and he is slightly better. I am hoping and praying for help. Will let you know.
