Methatrexate to treat Psoriatic Arthritis
Posted by: Teresa Emerson at 3:15PM EST on May 28, 2009
I recently have been diagnosed with Psoriatic Arthritis.  I am learning the damage that this disease can cause to your joints is comparable to that of Rheumatoid Arthritis.  That scares me, what scares me more is my doctor prescribing Methatrexate.  I am very hesitant to take this medication due to possible liver damage if used long term.  I have only taken 7.5mg this week, due to take 10mg next week.  Not sure if I want to continue on with this drug.  A possible side effect if too much of this med is in your system is hair loss. If anyone has taken this medication with success and minimal side effects, please share experience with me to put my mind at ease.

Help me find a nutrition centered MD in South Florida
Posted by: Shaz at 9:23PM EST on May 26, 2009
I like my Rheumatologist.  However, I'm reading Peter Bales, MD's book, "Osteoarthritis" and really feel I could solve most of my severe osteoarthritis nutritionally,  I can't do this alone.  I absolutely need help.  I'm 45 and have arthritis in most all of my joints.  How can I find a nutrition centered doctor?  Hopeful in south Florida
Idiopathic intermittent hydrarthrosis
Posted by: Claudia Sanders at 4:38PM EST on May 26, 2009
I have been having some strange symptoms that no one has been able to diagnose correctly. I went on the internet and found the above condition which perfectly described what I'm experiencing.  One of my knees swells every two weeks. It subsides on its own. It's very tight and uncomfortable because I can't bend it but there is no pain at all ~ ever.  I've had tests for Lupus, Lyme, RA which all turned out to be negative. I've had an x-ray and and MRI, neither of which showed anything. Is anyone familiar with this and how has it been treated? There are few articles and I haven't found anyone who specializes in it because it seems to be quite rare. I appreciate any help. I'm feeling pretty desperate because it has affected my ability to exercise and lead an active life which I was enjoying before this. It has swelled 9 times in the last 18 weeks. I also tried physical therapy and anti-inflammatories. The PT seems to have helped the symptoms slightly but I'd like to address the cause

 Thanks,
Claudia

Joint pain how can I help
Posted by: Tim Weyrauch at 12:11PM EST on May 22, 2009
My girlfriend has RA and when her joints are hot, inflammed and hurting I want to help.  She has me rub a product called Biofreeze on them and it helps a little.  Is there anything else that can be rubbed on her joints that will help relieve the pain?

Broken ankle 4x in past 2 years, Is this related to my RA or something else??
Posted by: susan sussen at 11:55AM EST on May 19, 2009
Hi!  I am 39 currently years old and was diagnosed with RA about 8 years ago.  In the past 2 years I have broken my ankle (the same one, same area) 4 times.  After both the 2nd and 3rd breaks my doc ordered a dexa scan which came back as normal each time.  I have had my calcium, vit D and all other blood levels checked on a routine basis and these have all come back as normal.  Does anyone have any ideas if this is related to my RA or am I just a freak.  The biggest mystery is that 3 out of the 4 breaks did not result from any trauma like falls or any type of injury.  I just wake up feeling intense pain in my ankle that is not your typical RA flare up pain.   My doc hesitats to put me on any osteoporisis meds since its not medically indicated by any of the tests that I have had and the insurance company probably won't pay for it either.    Any suggestions on what to do????

Help! I have psoriatic arthritis and I'm flaring!
Posted by: TammyRN at 10:51AM EST on May 17, 2009
I really need some help. I'm going to lose my mind. I'm 45 and feel 75. My feet are so swollen, red, and sore I can barely walk. At this very moment, I'm sitting in the recliner with baggies of ice tied around my feet. I'm a nurse and will do my last 12 hour shift Monday night. I start a new job Thursday where I won't have to be on my feet so much. I was on Enbrel and it kept my symptoms under control, but I went off it because I'm so afraid of all the risks. I don't know if my new insurance will cover it and I need a rheumatologist. There is only one arthritis doctor anywhere near where I live, and  he is so booked up I'll never get in to see him. I'm taking my limit of Motrin, and notice that my feet and legs are swelling at the end of the day. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

arthritus and blood thinners
Posted by: von Ingram at 8:05AM EST on May 12, 2009

Hi,

I have a friend who was recently prescribd blood thinners. He also suffers from arthritis. He was taking fish oil, which helped. The Dr now advises against the fish oil as an anti-inflammatory, due to the blood thinning effects. Anyone know of any alternatives? Ginger maybe?

thanx

arthritis vs. arthrosis
Posted by: Elaine Lawrence at 11:23PM EST on May 7, 2009
I need to know the specifics between arthritis and arthrosis-I was previously dianosed w/ the first & recently found out my current orthopedic surgeon wrote in his report that I have osteoarthrosis.  I would also like to find further info on Baker's cysts. I had one drained (under CT Scan) & now I'm in constant, mild-moderate pain compared to before when I was only in mod.-severe pain when it rained. When I saw him recently, he gave me a cortisone injection, but it only partially helped.
No relief in sight?

I am a 38 year old woman suffering from osteoarthritis.  The knuckles on my right hand seem to be growing constantly and the pain getting worse.  Now, my right ankle is beginning to hurt bad enough that sometimes it is difficult to walk.  My big problem: I had gastric bypass a few years ago and as a result I cannot take aspirin, ibuprofen, anti-inflammatory, NSAIDS or steroids.  I think that list happens to cover everything that might help.  I was just wondering if there are any others out there in my situation and what they are doing to help.

Hip Displasya
Posted by: Katherine Baine at 2:56PM EST on May 6, 2009

I'm a 34 year old woman who was diagnosed with hip displasya approximately a year ago.  As a child I remembered waking up in the mornings and having to wait for my hips to crack before I was able to get out of bed and walk normally.  My parents did take me to several doctors who only said that I must walk funny, be overweight(I wasn't), or have some sort of poor self image and needed attention.  Ultimately, the problem was never addressed but it wasn't a big deal because it was just odd and it didn't hurt...until one year ago.

My doctor was kind of matter-of-fact with his diagnoses and told me that there isn't anything that can really be done to treat the problem and the pain I was experiencing was the onset of arthritis.  The best offer I was given was to treat the pain with over the counter meds and if I was interested, he would refer me to a physical therapist but because I was still relatively active I was really promoting my own therapy.

I agree in that I'm not sure a therapist would be able to do anything for me that I dont already do physically and I take my meds as directed but sometimes the pain is crazy.  there has been instances where I've tried to get up from sitting or lying positions and I fall.  There are days that I limp around like I should have a cane.  I can actually feel the swelling in my hip joints shoot pain down my thighs.  If this is the 'onset'...I'm doomed!

I have my good days too, don't get me wrong, but if anyone has any other suggestions please let me know.

Inflammatory Arthritis
Posted by: Linda McCall at 10:05PM EST on May 1, 2009
My doctor has diagnosed me with having primary sjogrens syndrome with secondary inflammatory arthritis. What is inflammatory arthritis? Also, everything I've read indicates that sjogrens is considered primary in the absence of another autoimmune disease and secondary in the presence of another autoimmune disease. Can you clarify this for me?
