Enbrel side effects
Posted by: Shaideh129 on December 27, 2008 at 7:13AM EST

Hello gang,

My name is Shaideh and I have had RA since 2005. I have been on Enbrel since last year. I was wondering if any one else has experienced fatigue and low sex drive as a result of taking this med. It is not listed as side effect in the information papers. But as with most things the people that take it everyday are the best resource.

It always stopped fatigue for me, and fatigue is a big problem for RA people so I ask, do you think your RA is totally controlled on Enbrel. Fatigue is the first thing that leaves for me on all the TNF's. They do stop working, and the first thing that comes back is the fatigue. I would guess if you posted this on the main board, you would get the same response from everyone. So I doubt fatigue is a side effect of Enbrel.

As far as sex drive, its a bit easier for me on the TNFs, so I didn't have any loss either. Are you on any other medications? Loss of sex drive is common with many of the anti-depressants.

Are you also taking methotrexate? I take humira for 3 months and it is very helpful for my psoriatic arthritis but the methotrexate pills definitely suck the energy out of me.

Lots of message boards & sites talk about loss of sex drive on methotrexate but does anyone know if there is anything that can be taken or done to restore it?

After taking Enbrel for 2 months I suffered a perforated colon with abscess. It seems to be a not uncommon side effect.

I was on Embrel from 2001-2005. While Embrel made me feel great, I developed a dry cough that lingers for at least eight weeks. My immune system is shot, my lungs have been compromised, I was recently diagnosed with lymphoma. Now almost four years since I stopped taking Embrel, I still get this persistant cough that no antibiotic or cough rx can get rid of. Has anyone else had this coughing problem? If so how did you treat it?

I have been on Enbrel for over two years now and for the last several months I have had severe acne. They are just bumps on my face that don't seen to want to heal or go away. I scratch and pick at them which makes them worst. Also, fatigue is a problem for me. What you can take for the lack of sex drive is testosterone creme.

I've been enbrel since 2002. Enbrel has always bothered my eyes. They get red, swolen and sore. Has any one else had problems with their eyes?

I have been on Enbrel for 4 years, I have developed foot sores which won't heal and I have had to come of the drug, after about a month symptoms return and I am in extreme pain.

I just received my enbrel syringes this evening and have many reservations about taking them. Just reading about your side effects it seems clear to me that although Enbrel may help to a certain extent the adverse side effects outweigh the positive. I am seriously considering sending the medicine back and continuing with a more holistic approach.

I have been taking Enbrel for about 3 years now and it has given my life back. I have PA and it used to hurt like heck to do things like button my baby boy's onesies. No more. I am not disrespecting what others have written here, but I would urge everyone to look objectively at what the FDA and your doctor says, since no one should draw conclusions from the small number of people responding here (including me).

I have been on Enbrel for 6 weeks or so. When I did the 12th shot, in 5hrs a redness with a 3.5cm diameter occured around the injection site and the following morning, that redness felt extremely hot. I called my doc and he told me to give the next shot and increased the dose of my steroid. I did the 13th shot and again almost 5hrs later, the redness came along with temper and unbelievable itching! I called my doc again and he told me to stop the med immediately; double the steroid until I get rid of the itching and redness. I was about to leave the city for a vacation, so I asked him if it would be safe to swim ( not in some pool but in the sea) and his answer was that they did not had enough experience with this med and he could not foresee the probable effects, whether the sea water would make the redness worse or not. So he advised me not to swim. Also another side effect that I have not read around yet: When I do the shot, in 5 or 6hrs time I have to deal with a really swollen throat; accompanied by hoarseness and huskiness. It goes away in 1 to 3 days; so when I am lucky, I spend 3 days of the week comperably healthier. Has anyone faced these two?

I have been taking Embrel for 10 weeks with absolutely no side effects whatsoever and I am 99% clear of plaque Psoriasis, which I have had for over 30 years covering +/- 60% of my body. The remaining 1% is in my nails which seem to be improving as they grow out the infected areas. I learned to inject myself pain free after the second attempt with no site problems.
Had anyone told me this would be the outcome prior to the treatment I would have not believed them having had so many treatments before: methotrexate, lotions, creams. lt100 phototherapy to name the most recent; all they did was to aleviate the symptoms for a while.
I now feel clean, confident, and normal and am doing things I haven't done since I was a kid. Miraculous in a word.

I've been on weekly doses (50mg) of Enbrel (for RA) for 9 weeks now and feel worse than when I started. Some days I can't stand to touch anything because of what feels like nerve pain in hands and feet and joints burn. I've acquired a spare tire around my middle which I've read can be a side effect. My rheumy wants me to ride out the whole 3 month trial to see if it'll kick in; said he can get me through on Predisone but I've done that w/out relief so I'm passing. It's so encouraging to read how alot of people have had complete turnarounds on this so I'm still hoping this is my answer.......3 more weeks to go. And I've had terrible pain at the injection site as soon as the meds go in but it only lasts for the duration of the injection.....I can hack that if it works!!

I started Enbrel three weeks ago, and have developed a dry cough with occasional shortness of breath. Other than that, I am feeling a bit better. I'm not sure if I should wait and see if the cough/shortness of breath gets better or if I should try something else out.
