Hip Displasya
Posted by: Katherine Baine on May 6, 2009 at 2:56PM EST

I'm a 34 year old woman who was diagnosed with hip displasya approximately a year ago.  As a child I remembered waking up in the mornings and having to wait for my hips to crack before I was able to get out of bed and walk normally.  My parents did take me to several doctors who only said that I must walk funny, be overweight(I wasn't), or have some sort of poor self image and needed attention.  Ultimately, the problem was never addressed but it wasn't a big deal because it was just odd and it didn't hurt...until one year ago.

My doctor was kind of matter-of-fact with his diagnoses and told me that there isn't anything that can really be done to treat the problem and the pain I was experiencing was the onset of arthritis.  The best offer I was given was to treat the pain with over the counter meds and if I was interested, he would refer me to a physical therapist but because I was still relatively active I was really promoting my own therapy.

I agree in that I'm not sure a therapist would be able to do anything for me that I dont already do physically and I take my meds as directed but sometimes the pain is crazy.  there has been instances where I've tried to get up from sitting or lying positions and I fall.  There are days that I limp around like I should have a cane.  I can actually feel the swelling in my hip joints shoot pain down my thighs.  If this is the 'onset'...I'm doomed!

I have my good days too, don't get me wrong, but if anyone has any other suggestions please let me know.

I feel for you with your hip pain. I had surgery on my hip last Thursday. I had many diagnosis' for 4 years. many times, I had to crawl to get around and people thought I was over exhaugherating. Long story short, see if you can find an orthopedic doctor to see. I had/have hip impingement. I didn't meet the classic signs, but I had a different kind of MRI done, and as my doctor said, pictures don't lie. I am 5 days post op and have had less pain since I woke up. Something worth checking. It is a "new trend" as I was told. There were so many younger people presenting problems with their hips, that they were replacing. I also had pain down my legs, which the said means it is your back. I told them that it was only when my hip hurt. Good luck to you and feel free to ask me any more questions.
