Question about muscle pain
Posted by: Barb Kise on March 21, 2009 at 9:50AM EST

Hello, everyone.  I'm new to this site and have looked online for an answer to my question.

I'm fairly new to the osteoarthritis arena.  Had some miniscus removed in Sept. 08 and that's when the surgeon discovered lots of arthritis in my knee.  I actually feel I'm worse off since the surgery, but that could be my faulty memory.

I had one cortizone shot which was AMAZING and am scheduled for my second soon.

What's keeping me awake now is the muscle pain.  I can't sleep at night due to pain and cramping.  My calf feels swollen and it is tender.   It is more painful than the actual bone crunching.

What causes this and what can I do to make it better.  It DOES go away with the cortizone shot, but I don't want to live on those and I know you can't do that forever.

I don't know what causes it but I know how much the cortizone shot helps.I take prednisone tablets when I need them & get it with my iv once a month. So I guess if you need to, ask for it more often.I do have to watch my weight & have a bone density test more often, but it's worth it to feel good.Walking in the evening seems to help my pain in my feet & legs, when I feel like walking.

Somewhere I got the impression the muscle pain and spasms were from the arthritic inflamation also. The inflamation around the joints is not isolated and impacts the related muscle. It also may be triggered as the bone weakens and changes, impacting the attached mucsles. An anti-inflamitory med like Ibprophen might help. It does with me. The worst does seem to be at night, but maybe only because lying still it's easier to be aware of the muscle pain. Have you talked with your doctor about this at all? He may have some solutions also. Good luck and God bless.
