My 9 year old son was diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis last August. We tried Ibuprofen which did little to relieve his pain. His doctor has put him on adult strength Aleve for his pain. He is 9 years old and 55lbs. That's alot of medicine for such a little guy. Has anyone experienced complications from their child using Aleve longterm?

Hi, My mother has chronic rheumatoid arthritis. We recently got some tests done (after a gap of ~2 years). Her blood tests indicated that her RF factor is negative. However, her chest x-rays showed rheumatoid lungs. The specialist did not ask for further tests (such as CT scan & biopsy). He has started her on a 3 month course of Arava. The doctor initially wanted to start her on Methotraxate & Enbrel. However, TNF blockers & methotraxate can cause chest infections. That is why he used Arava.
However, I am very worried about her Rheumatoid Lungs. We are not sure at what stage she is. Some literature has suggested that chronic patients have rheumatoid nodules and some have ILD. The prognosis for ILD is very bad and left me very worried and anxious. The doctor also started her on a small dose of steroids, which seem to suppress the immune system and the inflammation. Is it possible that treatment with Arava can slow down the complications as well? In other words, is it possible that her lung condition improves by treating her with a DMARD drug? I wanted to know if there is a way to find a list of specialists in a given city. I have been unable to find specialists in San Francisco. But, that could be because I was looking in the woring place.

I have been informed by my doc that he will no longer prescribe Darvocet for me or any patient due to a planned recall by the FDA due to the following: increased suicide risk, heart damage with long-term, or high dose use. This is after 30 years or more on the market. They say that the risks far outweigh the minimal benefit people get from it, no more helpful than ibuprofen. According to what I have found on the net after a Google search, is that it was banned in the U.K. in 2005 for these reasons. My doc and I are trying to find an alternative as I cannot take ibuprofen, allergic to codeine and Ultram. Just a heads up for those of us that rely on Darvocet to help control our arthritic pain.
